Do You Have Too Much Money Invested in Your Guns?

I bookmarked the above tweet from T.REX ARMS a few months ago and promptly forgot about it, but it’s been kicking around in the back of my head off and on ever since. That’s because it asks a very good question that a lot of us probably don’t think much about. If you don’t want to click over to X to see the full photo, here it is:

It’s a little hard to tell, but the gun at the top looks like a Staccato XL 2011 which is, no doubt, an excellent handgun. It’s accompanied by a red dot a couple of magazines and, I’m sure, a T.REX holster.

The group below includes what looks like a GLOCK 17, a red dot, and…a lot of additional gear including holsters, ear pro, eye pro, an IFAK, tourniquets, ten magazines, a shot timer, gun belts, mag holders and four cases of range ammo. Both setups will cost you roughly the same amount of money.

We’ve never been ones to call high end firearms overpriced just because they ostensibly do exactly the same thing as lower cost guns. A Wilson Combat CQB Elite and a SIG P365 are both 10+1 9mm handguns. If you have the shekels and like the more expensive gun, go ahead and buy the gun you like.

That said, we all (or most of us) have financial constraints under which we operate. We only have only so much disposable income to devote to our guns, gear, and training to develop and maintain our armed self-defense and/or competition skills. Some of us will choose to spend more on their guns and less on additional gear and training. Even if we have the money, most of us don’t train often enough anyway due to a lack of time and other commitments.

Anyway, that T.REX tweet is a good illustration of exactly the tradeoff most of us have or will make, consciously or not. Maybe it will make you ask yourself if you’re putting your hard-earned dollars in the right places. At least, that’s the idea.

  1. I Haz A Question

    A quality gat.
    A sturdy belt.
    A reliable holster.
I recommend using the rest of the money for ammo + training.
