SHOT Show 2025: H&R Unleashes Lever Guns

Harrington and Richardson, now a brand under the PSA/JJE umbrella, are known for creating retro rifles. PSA bought Nodak Spud, and the owner of Nodak Spud is the CEO of H&R. He’s an expert in retro rifles, and retro rifles are H&R’s bread and butter. Now, H&R is out with a line of lever action rifles.

H&R presented their new rifles at SHOT 2025. It’s important to explain that the rifles at SHOT are early production models, and some tweaks might be made. I’m not a lever gun expert; I’m an enthusiast at best, but these appear to be based on the Winchester 1892 guns, which do have a very strong action.

The H&R Lever Guns

H&R only showed .357 Magnum variants, but I couldn’t imagine them sticking to just one caliber. I would be shocked if we don’t see .44 Magnum and .45 Colt variants as well in the near future. The initial batch features a stainless and polymer model, a case-hardened option, and a traditional wood blued steel model.

I really like the stainless model. (Travis Pike for SNW)

There are barrel lengths that vary between 16 and 20 inches. The 20-inch barreled gun has a short magazine tube, and man, it’d be a lot cooler if it didn’t. As a millennial I’m most attracted to the stainless variant and would love to make it something a little crazier.

The actions felt smooth and fun to manipulate. You can’t beat the tactile feel of a lever gun. The trigger felt nice, and the guns all look great. I’m always excited to see a new lever gun on the market.

It would be a lot cooler if the magazine tube was longer. (Travis Pike for SNW)

As the man says, show us the money! Well, PSA hasn’t…yet. They promise, however, that the price would be competitive with current offerings on the market and PSA does a pretty good job of keeping their guns affordable. PSA and H&R don’t have the reputation to beat the big boys like Ruger and Henry, but if they price them around $700 dollars, these new lever guns would be a solid deal.

  1. A lever gun, chambered in .357 Magnum with a 20-inch barrel and full length tube magazine, is a solid choice for home defense and even many hunting scenarios. That particular platform provides respectable capacity (10+ cartridges?) and terminal ballistics in an extremely handy and maneuverable package. So, what you lose in the .357 Magnum chambering (in terms of terminal ballistics compared to .30-30 Winchester), you gain in “firepower” (almost twice the ammunition capacity).

I cannot begin to imagine why someone would manufacture a .357 Magnum lever gun with an extra short tube magazine.

  2. 1892 is a better choice for handgun rounds, it is a shorter action than the ’94.
nodak spud ak receivers are really spendy. hope these aren’t.
