Memorial Day is fast approaching. While it’s the unofficial start of summer, its meaning is far more important than just that. It’s a day for us, as citizens of the United States, to reflect on the sacrifices that were made for us. The loss of sons, husbands, fathers, uncles, daughters, wives, and aunts enables us to stand free. That sacrifice should never be forgotten. While we’re eating hot dogs and burgers, washing them down with some sweet tea or a cold beer, remember why we can enjoy that freedom. Instill that in your children.
A Day of Remembrance
And while Memorial Day is often a day of consumerism, with many companies offering sales and discounts, look to those that are doing meaningful work. Vortex Optics, for the second year, is offering a limited-run Poppy Remember T-shirts to support the Wisconsin VFW. If you’re wondering why poppies, here are a few lines from the famed World War I Trench Poet, John McCrae’s, In Flanders Fields:
In Flanders fields the poppies blow,
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely signing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
Poppies are a symbol of war, loss, and sacrifice. After some of the war’s deadliest fighting in places like Flanders, bright red poppies were among the first flowers to bloom across the scarred, shell-pocked landscape. That’s what inspired John McCrae.

The T-Shirt
The Poppy Remember short sleeve t-shirt is a tribute to service, sacrifice, and the people who carry those memories. It is designed as a respectful nod to both fallen veterans and those still with us, tying symbolism and purpose together in a way that feels authentic and respectful. As mentioned, the proceeds from every sale will benefit the Wisconsin VFW, helping fund programs and outreach efforts that directly support veterans and their families statewide.
The Wisconsin VFW continues to serve as a critical resource for veterans through advocacy, benefits assistance, community engagement, and remembrance initiatives that keep the realities of military service connected to local communities. The VFW posts often become gathering places where camaraderie and shared experience endure long after the battles are over. It’s a way for our veterans to come together and heal.

That broader mission is at the heart of this collaboration. Wisconsin VFW State Commander Ty Letto emphasized the partnership’s importance, noting that support from Vortex Optics expands the organization’s ability to advocate for and serve veterans throughout Wisconsin and beyond. According to Letto, partnerships like this strengthen the VFW’s reach and help ensure the organization continues “Making It Count” for veterans every day.
Zooming Out
The poppy symbol has come to represent veterans worldwide and has become a part of popular culture. Have you ever listened to Johnny Cash’s Ragged Old Flag? This Memorial Day, remember. For more information and to purchase the limited edition T-shirt, shop here.
