Georgia Student Arrested for Posting Pic of LEGO Gun – and a Threat – on Snapchat

We used to write derisively about asinine educrats who would suspend or expel kids who made finger guns in class or bit their Pop-Tart into the shape of a pistol. That kind of mindless application of schools’ zero tolerance gun policies deserved the ridicule and shame that it brought down upon them.

So when we heard that the principal of a prep school in Augusta, Georgia had a student arrested for posting a pic of a LEGO gun on his Snapchat account, we figured it was the work of yet another education system automaton. But it seems there’s a little more to the story. The kid in question didn’t just post the pic.

Eric Hedinger, the principal of Augusta Preparatory Day School, told [Columbia County Georgia Sheriff’s] deputies a student had uploaded a picture to Snapchat of a ‘pistol’ with the caption “shooting up the school so I don’t have to take the stats exam tomorrow. Don’t come yall!

You probably guessed that it was the “shooting up the school” part of his post that made it a little more concern-worthy. When deputies knocked on on the student’s door, he told them he was just joking because he wasn’t looking forward to taking an AP exam the next day.

The deputy contacted Judge Leslie Morgan and she issued a warrant for terroristic threats.

The student, age 18, was taken into custody and transported to the Columbia County Detention Center.

So he’s an adult. And he’s been charged. Moral of the story: don’t threaten people on social media. The internet is forever. And if you’re 18, so is your criminal record.
