Irresponsible Gun Owner of the Day: Miami Officer Sthephany Canizares

Long, long ago in a corner of the internet that’s now far, far away, we used to have a semi-regular feature entitled Irresponsible Gun Owner of the Day. We’d highlight particularly egregious violations of basic firearms safety practices that wound up getting the gun owners involved in trouble.

The fact is, Americans are extraordinarily good at following the Four Rules. We’re a country of about 100 million gun owners who have about half a billion firearms. Given the pervasiveness of gun ownership in the land of the free and the home of the brave, the number of accidental firearms deaths and injuries in the US is miniscule…far less than occur from other causes such as driving, alcohol use, or medial malpractice. But that doesn’t mean we can’t always do better and one way of making that point is by highlighting rank stupidity like that shown by a Miami police officer over the weekend.

It seems Officer Sthephany (sic) Canizares got into an argument with her significant other after she found some “inappropriate messages” on his phone. According to NBC Miami . . .

According to an arrest report, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies had responded after Canizares called saying she was being held against her will by her boyfriend.

That was apparently a lie. Canizares allegedly tried to drive home her point regarding relationship fidelity by firing her service weapon during an argument the two had

…When deputies arrived, Canizares ran away from them, the report said.

The boyfriend told deputies they had been “having relationship issues for the past few days” and that he found Canizares outside holding a firearm in her hand, the report said.

He said he became in fear for his life and their child’s safety, so he went inside, got his daughter from her crib and his firearm from a safe box, and locked himself in a bedroom, the report said.

After Canizares took off, the responding cops found her pistol and a spent casing. She eventually cooled down, however.

A few hours later, Canizares contacted authorities, saying she had shot her gun and wanted to turn herself in, and she was taken into custody, the report said.

Not only has she been relieved of her duties, but she’s also been charged with aggravated assault and discharging a firearm indoors in a residential area. And for her conspicuous lack of self control and appallingly bad judgement, the probably soon-to-be-former Officer Canizares is SNW’s first (and quite possibly last) Irresponsible Gun Owner of the Day.

  1. How do these people pass a background test and a polygraph? How do they pass a psychological examination and go on to be a police officer? Have they lowered the standards?

    1. Remember this?

Jordan, a 49-year-old college graduate, took the exam in 1996 and scored 33 points, the equivalent of an IQ of 125. But New London police interviewed only candidates who scored 20 to 27, on the theory that those who scored too high could get bored with police work and leave soon after undergoing costly training.

Standards have always been pretty low. Do what your told, always defer to higher rank, don’t think too hard about what your doing or you might hesitate and get hurt, everyone out there is a potential threat to your safety, gotta get home at night, back your brothers/sisters in all things.

They’re not the brightest, they’re not the best. They’re under a lot of stress. They self-medicate and engage in domestic violence at levels far greater than the general public. In their defense it’s a shit job dealing with the same assholes every night and for a long time in their careers it comes with shit pay. I can’t believe anyone willingly or eagerly wants to be a cop which in itself is sort of a red flag regarding who actually wants the job.

      1. Shire-man is spot on.

It also doesnt help when you cant trust your leadership because to move up (get promoted) in the department it usually requires you to go after other cops.

Law Enforcement is a cannibalistic career field. They eat their own and form little cliques and gangs for power and protection and God help you, if you go against the clique or get shunned by the good ol’ boy club. It’s why most cops will resign before getting fired because getting fired could mean getting black-balled by a large agency which will make it next to impossible to find another cop job.

After 22 years I had to pull the plug. It’s all good though, I’m semi-retired and work happily in a warehouse now.

    2. There are no standards for police officers anymore. Nobody wants to do the job so they take what they can get. In my state, half the graduating officers from the state academy are females that are barely 5 feet tall and under 150lbs.

What are they going to do to a 6ft+ tall 250lbs man?

      Nothing.

At worst they will get the tar beat out of them, at best they will be forced to use lethal force in situations that dont require it because the less than lethal options still require them to put handcuffs on the subject.

Plus, who wants to work for sociopath politicians that will throw you under the bus the first chance they get?
