NBC Says Kirk Assassin’s Mauser Rifle is ‘Ideally Suited for Use in Sniper-Style Killings’

The Mauser 98 rifle allegedly used by Tyler Robinson to murder Charlie Kirk

The authorities have not revealed how they believe Robinson’s grandfather obtained the gun or whether they were able to successfully trace it. An ATF spokesman declined to comment to NBC News.

The gun is a bolt-action rifle, which requires users to manually reload between shots. A person must pull the bolt to the rear and then move it forward in order to move a new round into place and fire again.

Following the wars in Europe, countless American GIs returned home with German-made Mausers. In subsequent years, Mauser rifles and other similar versions could be obtained simply by ordering them through the mail.

For decades, they have been favored by hunters who prize them for their durability, reliability and accuracy. With .30-06 rounds, they are ideal weapons to take down medium to large game like deer, elk and even bear.

But it is exceedingly rare for them to be used in crimes, according to former ATF gun agents and federal reports. Most gun violence in America is carried out with pistols, and semiautomatic AR-15-style rifles have been used to commit some of the nation’s deadliest mass shootings.

“A bolt-action rifle? You don’t see those guns used in violent crimes,” said Tim Sloan, a former ATF agent who retired as the head of its Mexico branch.

That’s because they can’t be as easily concealed as handguns and they’re not designed to spray a large volume of bullets at once, experts say.

But they are, in some ways, ideally suited for use in sniper-style killings. Because they are so ubiquitous and beloved by hunters and recreational shooters, a person toting such a rifle in a place like Utah would not arouse any suspicion.

And they are so well made that, with a decent scope, a person with basic firearm proficiency can strike a target from 150 to 200 yards away, roughly the distance of the shot fired by the Kirk assassin.

“You do not have to have gone to sniper school or have been any type of champion marksmen,” said Brian Greco, a retired NYPD officer who served in the counterterrorism unit and a Marine Corps veteran.

  1. “Most gun violence in America is carried out with pistols, and semiautomatic AR-15-style rifles have been used to commit some of the nation’s deadliest mass shootings.”

    False,

All criminal violence using a gun is carried out by the criminal and not the gun. There is not even one AR-15 or pistol that carried out even one mass shooting – each and every act of criminal violence using any gun or any weapon of any type/sort/kind is carried out by the perpetrator(s) of such criminal violence. [note: considering all criminal violence, even some being ‘political violence’ – other non-firearms weapons outnumber firearms weapon use 1,000:1]

Notice how the left-wingers media and democrats will always ‘condemn’ and phrase and call out such as so called ‘gun violence’ but will not ‘condemn’ the perpetrators of the criminal violence. Almost immediately after Charlie Kirk was murdered, and in the days following, a lot of democrats “condemned’, and phrased and called out, as did the left wing media, so called ‘gun violence’ yet would not ‘condemn’ or phrase or call out the the act of murder and instead took part in spreading the lie the far left wing murderer, Tyler Robinson, was MAGA or republican or conservative despite the evidence to the contrary. Ya would think these democrat politicians would ‘condemn’ and address a murder no matter which ‘side’ did it, I mean, its normal and sane and compassionate that an elected official acknowledge that a heinous act of murder was committed by ‘not agreeing’ it was ‘a good thing’ yet some of the democrat politicians did agree with the far left wing insanity that this murder was ‘a good thing to have happened’ and they went into attack mode with the lie the murderer was MAGA or republican or conservative despite the evidence to the contrary and ‘gun violence’.

The factual truth of the matter is this: There is no such thing as ‘gun violence’. There are criminal acts of violence carried out by perpetrators who choose to use a gun.

    1. Nero "...diction, not grammar..." Wolfe

“Most gun violence in America is carried out with pistols, and semiautomatic AR-15-style rifles have been used to commit some of the nation’s deadliest mass shootings.”

Well, I read that sentence differently. Granted he used the objectionable phrase “gun violence” but the sentence is written in the passive voice, suggesting that the firearms noted were merely tools, and therefore are not in and of themselves responsible for the action.

I am well aware that their rhetoric often implies, and sometimes explicity states, that firearms are evil by nature and are the cause of much mayhem. I agree that the phrase “gun violence” is objectionable because it suggests an active voice, but the authors did qualify that phrase with language that places the onus of the action on the actors, not the tools.

  2. Got yet another lefty zoomer with a broken brain full of indoctrination:

“He just came out and said, ‘The children are safe,’ and, ‘Free Palestine,'” Bartelson said.

After 10 years of their childhood being told by their teachers, parents, TV and social media personalities and their Reddit feedback loop that they must “fight fascism at all costs” and they’re in an “existential war for democracy itself” we’re going to see more and more of this.

    1. They had to create division and hate. They gave up on the policy arguments after Obama was elected, believing they could win with favorable demographics, propaganda, and institutional control. Then, they began losing some control, in part because Elon bought twitter. They were pissed because they hate free speech and debate.

    1. Millions of people who didn’t know Charlie Kirk are now watching his videos. Educating themselves. And they will become as angry as I am.

  3. I’m not a hunter. I thought about getting a mossberg in 308 that takes M14 magazines. Now it seems they now have “an excuse” to come for all the deer rifles.

And you hunters thought you were safe. No you were never safe.

The first step in resisting tyranny is to have a gun. Any gun. In the orginal movie “Red Dawn” from the 1980s. The resistance only had bolt action rifles. They used them to get the Russian soldiers AK47s.

So yes. Even a Hi Point or even a North American Arms mini revolver, can be used until you get something more effective. In the film “Die Hard” John McClain only his side arm . Until he used it to get an MP5.

The gun grabbers want every single gun you have. You are a fool to think otherwise.

    Btw
A civilian in Kentucky on a restaurant patio, held off a mob of some fifty people. With only his NAA mini revolver. And several of the rioters had AR15 rifles.

And that duck gun you use, that is on the list too. To be confiscated from you as well.

    1. The 90’s AWB was born from “compromise” after 15 years of trying to go after handguns.

Watch them go full-on “turn’em all in” mode so in 10-15 years they can “compromise” yet again with another AWB.

      1. They’re going to have to confiscate “sniper rifles” for your safety. You can have one shotgun and one revolver. No one needs anything more than that except the VIP security details, the police, and about 20 federal agencies, including the Dept of Education.
