Everytown’s Sham Gun Training Program Caused a Fight Within in the Org Because It Means There’s a Place in Society for Gun Ownership

A revealing article in USA Today last week reported that Everytown for Gun Safety’s new “firearms training” program, Train SMART, “met stiff opposition from [Everytown’s] own members and longtime supporters.” The reason, as the article made clear, is simple. Gun control advocates don’t want “harm reduction” when it comes to gun ownership; they want “abstinence.” In other words, they see Everytown’s firearm safety training as a betrayal, because it tacitly acknowledges there is a place for firearms in America. What Everytown’s supporters want, however, is to put an end to gun ownership, period.

For people of a certain age, this may bring to mind the debate over “sex education” in schools, where the “just don’t do it” crowd clashed with the “if you do it, do it carefully and knowledgably” contingent. Yet another viewpoint, however, held that sex education was fine, in the right context, but that context was not public school.

To stretch the analogy slightly further, NRA takes the third view when it comes to Everytown’s entry into the firearms training space: firearm training is great, but the right context for it isn’t with people who would rather you not own a gun at all.

But if the “just say no” crowd was portrayed as naïve, how much more athwart reality are people who resent – in a nation of over 400 million guns, where the right to keep and bear arms is enshrined in the Constitution – education on their safe handling and use? That, however, is the reaction Everytown is getting from its members and supporters.

One is quoted as calling Everytown’s program “hurtful and insulting to survivors.” She elaborated: “Our mission is to reduce gun violence and keep people from having guns in their homes and here you are giving a gun safety class that encourages gun ownership. You can’t have it both ways.” [Emphasis added.] Another was “so enraged by the Train SMART launch she resigned her position leading a local survivor group.” It felt, she said, “like a kick in the teeth. All these years working on expanded background checks and how we know having a gun in the home won’t make you safer … this doesn’t make any sense.”

everytown be smart training

John Feinblatt, president of Everytown, was as condescending and dismissive of his members’ anger as he usually is toward gun owners. Any new program, he told USA Today, comes with a mix of “curiosity, enthusiasm and skepticism.” But if there is any enthusiasm for the program, it wasn’t reflected in USA Today’s reporting, which documented anger from gun control advocates and skepticism, if not justified mockery, from Second Amendment supporters. Feinblatt likewise unconvincingly tried to rebrand his own organization – which pursues sweeping bans on America’s most popular firearms and harsh prior restraints on the ownership of other guns – as a “wide tent … as opposed to being … anti-gun or hardline gun control.”

As is often the case when it comes to anti-gun messaging, Everytown is hoping to leverage the credibility of military veterans to promote its “unique” approach to training. As we have documented many times at this site, however, having served in the military or law enforcement does not necessarily ensure a person supports the Second Amendment or civilian gun ownership. Those are also “big tent” organizations that include gun control supporters.

Everytown Be SMART training program

Everytown’s lead trainer, for example, indicated that students will be taught: “purchasing a firearm will increase the risk someone in your home will be shot” and “you should not always assume buying a gun will be the key part of your home defense plan.” Again, the condescension is palpable, with the unspoken message being: “If you’re foolish enough to make this choice, we will do our best to keep you from killing yourself or a loved one.”

Meanwhile, an “enraged” former Everytown member chastised the group for “wasting precious resources on ‘reinventing the wheel’ on training,” apparently preferring they spend it on the group’s efforts to ban guns instead.

The article acknowledged that Everytown’s training is currently available only online with the hope of adding “in-person and range sessions next year.” It goes without saying that firearms training that involves no handling or discharge of guns under expert supervision is of limited value. But if the goal is mainly to discourage gun ownership, a virtual format makes sense.

Whether Everytown’s training will still exist by next year remains to be seen. But the reaction of its supporters has already taught – or at least, reinforced – an important lesson every gun owner in America should remember. Gun control advocates don’t want you to be safe and responsible with guns. They don’t want you to have them at all.

  1. Our mission is to reduce gun violence and keep people from having guns in their homes

Wait… what? I thought it was “commonsense gun safety.” So all this time, they’ve been lying about their true intentions. Now we get to quote this every time they bring up “commonsense gun safety.”

  2. The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth:
“Gun control advocates don’t want you to be safe and responsible with guns. They don’t want you to have them at all.”

  3. Everytown was established with the specific mission of doing away with gun ownership. They have tried everything to do it, but realized early on that they had to lie and exploit emotion and suppress logic and reason to do it and start a ‘national discussion’ so they could cloud the subject and become dominate in the ‘discussion’.

For example, the lie that ‘guns are the number one killer of children’ lie – it was never true and still today is not true. The CDC points this out in their mortality tables – the number one killer of children age 1 to age 17 (age 18 and above are adults) is (non-firearm) accidents (car accidents being a part of that). Then they threw in ages 18 – 20 (which are adults), which intentionally biased their so called ‘scientific studies’ they put forth as somehow ‘proof’ that ‘guns are the number one killer of children’ and their ‘studies’ got analyzed by independent sources that do such and they were classed as ‘junk science’ (especially for their claims about children and suicides – on a note: there is exactly zero actual scientific evidence that substantiates the anti-gun orgs, including Everytown, claim that a ‘gun in the home increases chances of suicide’, all of the anti-gun studies underlying-posited as fact an assumption that if a gun is in the home a person will for a fact suddenly want to use the gun to commit suicide, that’s not how suicide works.) .

Then when they got caught finally in that lie, they started saying ‘guns are the number one killer of kids’ implying it was ‘children’ and the term ‘kids’ is actually undefined and can mean anyone at any age who has a parent. But that ‘kids’ thing didn’t pan out either, so they switched to having their medical doctor stooges saying ‘guns are the number one killer of children’ ’cause, morons believe everything doctors say especially the left wing ‘follow the science’ crowd where most of their gun control loving morons are.

Then they came out with ‘common sense gun safety’ which turned out to be a renaming of their specific mission of doing away with gun ownership by use of lawfare and using left wing ‘law makers’ (democrat politicians), which they changed to a theme of ‘gun violence prevention’ using a term that doesn’t actually exist (its people that commit violence, not guns) so they can define it to mean anything they want. Then Biden came along and thus the unconstitutional and unlawful ‘office of gun violence prevention’. The anti-gun orgs, Everytown included, had unrestricted access to that office, it was staffed and run by anti-gun people and by actual members of the anti-gun orgs – not one time was there ever an effort to include anyone but anti-gun while at the same time, in the beginning, saying ‘they included stakeholders’ but it turns out the stakeholders they were talking about were anti-gun orgs so the pro-2A pro-gun population was specifically excluded and not represented in government – the anti-gun orgs could have changed their HQ addresses to ‘1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington D.C.’ they had such unrestricted access and use of that office. And from that office flowed stuff, using Biden ‘executive order’ and feeding democrats and Rino stuff for ‘law making, that eventually resulted in basically an ATF war on gun owners by an on-board dominating left wing leadership and trigger happy group of thugs in the ATF, that eventually led to them persecuting millions and murdering an innocent man and getting away with it and it was obvious that the goal was to chip away at gun ownership until it became just about impossible to own a gun and relegate more and more of the 2A to ‘permission based’ the government controlled and until it was in effect no longer a constitutional right – ya know, in the name of ‘gun violence prevention’ and ‘common sense gun safety’ that only affected law abiding citizens who were not doing the violence while doing nothing about the criminals doing the violence.

So now its become ‘Everytown’s Sham Gun Training Program’ using ‘instructors’ that are also gun-control freaks and think the second amendment is to be used as a ‘permission based thing’ controlled by the state. And now their specific and original agenda, “doing away with gun ownership”, is once again exposed by their infighting.

The Everytown course is not about training, its about indoctrination to make people think they are about ‘gun safety’ and if they can control that narrative its easier to say “look, we are about gun safety and gun ownership”. Which is a ‘bona fide’ they need to establish themselves as part of the ‘gun community’ for new gun owners they want to cull out as their own who do not know their history and agenda while they again start chipping away towards their specific and original agenda of “doing away with gun ownership”. Or as the Star Wars character Admiral Ackbar once exclaimed, ‘Its A Trap!’.

    1. correction for “…claim that a ‘gun in the home increases chances of suicide’,…’

      that should jhave been

‘claim that a ‘gun in the home increases risk of suicide’,…’

A person at risk of suicide is always at risk of suicide, not just when a gun is in the home thus there is no greater risk of suicide if a gun is in the home. The fact that people at risk of suicide will use a gun sometimes if its available does not mean the risk of suicide increased because the gun was in the home. Plus there is the thing that the number of suicides in stats to have been by use of a firearm, yeah, well, over half of them were probably not really suicides – there’s a whole ‘sort of cottage industry’ of anti-gun bureaucrats, not forensic doctors, making the determinations that deaths were suicides by gun when they were really accidents or murder staged to look like suicide – and police overall are really bad at determining if a true gun suicide exists if it was staged murder or an accident. To these bureaucrats, if a gun was involved its automatically a gun suicide. Heck, these same types of bureaucrats ruled a woman stabbed 37 times as a gun suicide because there was a gun at the scene even though it did not belong to the victim nor have any trace of the victim on it (no DNA or anything), because there was a gunshot wound at the base of the neck and despite 7 actual forensic doctors (bought in by the family) proving she was dead from the stabbing before the gun shot was administered – this is still listed officially as a gun suicide and the police were prohibited from re-opening the investigation so there is a killer out there that literally got away with it. What people do not realize, most ‘official’ decisions from ‘coroner’ offices for cause of death do not come from ‘forensic doctors’, but rather from a ‘bureaucrat’ holding an office they were either appointed to or elected to.

      1. clarification for: ‘(no DNA or anything)’

She wasn’t shot with that gun, thus no blood traces on it from the contact wound or blow back blood particles, and no other DNA on the gun and her finger prints were not on the gun. Its thought the killer had originally planned to shoot her with a different gun and lay this one down and then try to make it look like suicide but changed his/her mind and stabbed her to death instead then to make sure she was dead shot her with his different gun and the one found with the body the killer left not realizing he/she had dropped it in the frantic act to stab her to death and didn’t notice it in his/her haste to leave. Despite not being shot with that gun at the scene, and, according to actual forensic doctors showing she was dead before the gunshot happened and the gun having no trace of her on it and the 37 stab wounds 18 of which would have been fatal within several seconds and the knife (from the kitchen) found still in the body – the bureaucrat ruled it a gun suicide.

  4. The EveryTown members don’t understand the guerrilla warfare nature of this training program. In the Blue gun control states, you have to take gun safety courses before you can get a permit to purchase (think WA, NY, CA, MD, NJ, etc). And, actually, in the Red states, mostly, to get a conceal carry permit, you have to take a training course of some sort (see, for example, Florida). And in both Red and Blue, generally, the laws say that the trainers have to be nationally certified. Which has meant, until now, NRA and USCCA are pretty much the only game in town. But EveryTown is a national organization. And most states are going to allow their training since it is “nationally certified” ….. so now, many people who don’t get the underlying politics of this, instead they just want their CCW permit or permit to purchase, are going to be taking gun safety training from left wing, gun control promoting trainers.

There’s a deep, underlying motivation for EveryTown to do this and it ain’t to promote safe gun ownership.

    1. “And, actually, in the Red states, mostly, to get a conceal carry permit, you have to take a training course of some sort (see, for example, Florida).”

      Not any more, son.

No permit of any type required to conceal-carry in Florida.

The only thing a permit grants you is the right to take a handgun home the moment you pay for it, without a waiting period.

Try and keep up, OK? 😉

  5. Remember the demented pixie-troll that makes your home-depot garden gnome statue seem an intelligent life form, Greta Thunberg, yeah, the insufferable troll that demands everyone think her to be something significant – yeah, the one with the ‘flotilla’ (officially called the Global Sumud Flotilla) that’s supposed to make its way to Gaza City, where it will provide relief, end the war, and allow everybody to live happily ever after. Well, guess who is actually in charge – Hamas, yep, its actually a Hamas operation, according to secret documents just uncovered by Israeli forces operating in Gaza.

  6. Kamala Harris SO Dumb She ‘Lifted’ Incorrect Information on Trans People for Her Book … and Got CAUGHT.

“Have we mentioned lately how dumb Kamala Harris is? No? Well, just in case we hadn’t written it in a while, we figured we’d go ahead and write it again.

Man oh man, Kamala Harris is dumber than dumb.

We have seen moldy bologna sandwiches with a higher IQ.

Case in point, she can’t even ‘lift’ information from other people correctly to use in her crappy new book. Hey, we get it, Kammy was trying to make some dramatic point but she really should have looked at the info she was LIFTING.

    Jesse Singal caught it.

    ‘Jesse Singal
    @jessesingal
New from me: Kamala Harris says in her book that 350 trans people were killed in the U.S. in 2024. An in-depth investigation (2 minutes on of Google) show that she lifted this figure from a report of *worldwide* deaths of trans people. U.S. figure is roughly 41.’
