Some people have really just lost the plot. It’s fine to be mad about the Senate Parliamentarian BS. I am too, but eliminating the $200 tax is still a significant improvement over the status quo and the first time the NFA has ever been weakened in any way.
Anti-gunners don’t really do this kind of thing. They happily take any erosion of our rights they can get, big or small, and call it a victory. We should take big swings, but I’m still happy when we get base hits if that’s what we can get for now. Some of y’all are spoiled in red states and it shows (I live in California).
Two frequent arguments I’m seeing by people who are unhappy now . . .
1. “The tax cut is meaningless. No one cares about the tax. Killing registration was what would have mattered.”
That’s insane to me. A reduction of $200 per suppressor or SBR is not chump change, especially for those who make their own. Also, this argument makes it seem like you’re fine with excise taxes on guns, so long as there is no registration. Taxing a right is a near-equivalent evil to registration.
Defeating the tax absolutely matters and will make NFA items more common through a considerable reduction in the cost of admission.
2. “Dems will just raise the tax to $10,000 when it’s their turn!”
Yeah, maybe. But that goes for registration, too. Had the HPA and SHORT act died via reconciliation, they could be resurrected that same way.
Permanent victory comes only via lasting cultural change that makes restoring taxes and registration toxic for at least purple state Democrats. NFA items have to be nearly as common as handguns. And making them $200 cheaper will go a long way toward making that happen.
Rifleman4wvu hasn’t seen the icing on the cake here:

“I don’t think this is a win, we were told Trump / Republicans would abolish the NFA registry, the registry is still there and when dems get power again, the window is open to raise the Tax Stamp ten times the $200.”
taxes raised or lowered by ‘reconciliation’ can be raised or lowered by ‘reconciliation’ at a later time, so even if the dems did get power again they could still raise by ‘reconciliation’ anyway so lowering it in ‘reconciliation’ now has no bearing on if the dems can raise it again in ‘reconciliation’.
Trump / Republicans never said that ‘reconciliation’ would do this for a fact. ‘reconciliation’ is not the only way to do this, not the only options for the Trump admin and there are other ways. Personally, if congress does it I’d rather it be in a separate bill and passed as law then so it will be more ‘reconciliation proof’ if the dems do get power again. But I also kinda more prefer the courts method so the NFA either completely, or maybe just for suppressors and SBR/SBS, can be ruled unconstitutional and a $0 tax gives us a good shot on that because there is already precedent that a $0 tax and the things associated with it are unconstitutional and the NFA is really a tax law to begin with. But for any method, time will tell.
I’m constantly amazed by the number of mental midgets who think this is all going to be fixed overnight…and are whining about small steps in the right direction.
It’s taken decades for the system to get this f*cked….so it’s going to take a little more than 6 months, and a single bill to unf*ck it.
Emotionally driven will emote.
They just defunded Planned Parenthood. Why didn’t Bush do that? Why didn’t any other Republican president attend a March for Life rally? The answer is that it was always just talk for the base. Trump is the most pro-life president in history.
Trump shut down the border in record time. St. Reagan helped turn California blue by granting amnesty to illegals (with no deal to fix the problems that led to illegal crossings!). Trump is fighting back against the unconstitutional interpretation of anchor babies. Why didn’t any other Republican presidents do those things? The answer is that it was always just talk for the base.
Has there ever been a more dramatic shift in an administration prioritizing the Second Amendment? We just repealed part of the Gun Control Act that seemed unthinkable a few years ago. Why didn’t Paul Ryan help with that? Why didn’t Paul Ryan fund border protection and immigration enforcement? The answer is that it was always just talk for the base.
I understand the cynicism in politics. People are sick and tired of decades of being lied to and taken advantage of. But some things are actually changing. It’s okay to appreciate some wins. The constant negativity, no matter what, is tiresome. Channel that energy into helping the cause.
When I was a small child, when I whined about not getting everything I wanted my Dad would say “You have more now than you did, maybe you will get more later. Quit whining about it.” and then he would hug me and life went on.
National Firearms Act, not Gun Control Act. This bill only affected the NFA, the abominable GCA remains untouched.
Oh yeah, thanks.
If you consider for how many decades and election cycles gun owners have considered it a massive win just to not be forced by shock troops to “turn’em all in” I’d say this is a pretty big win.
“When I was a small child, when I whined about not getting everything I wanted my Dad would say “You have more now than you did, maybe you will get more later. Quit whining about it.” and then he would hug me and life went on.”
When I whined/complained/cried about not getting something I wanted, my Dad would say “Want in one hand and crap in the other and see which one gets full quickest”.
Life went on. The lesson was to work for what I wanted. I have essentially hired SAF and GOA to do that work for me.
It’s impossible to respect a man who bottoms, and Vance bottomed in front of everyone. Everything else is irrelevant.
Lol are you running against him in 28? Enjoy your white whale I guess.
So all these whiners in the “gun community” are telling me that when a gun goes on sale for $50 less. Or $200 less. You’re going to complain about not paying the original full price???
those who can do, two hondo got nothin’ to do with it.
i’ll bitch if i want.
