WOOX, an Italian-American stockmaker with U.S. operations based in Hickory, North Carolina, announced Aug. 3rd the release of the Gladiatore V2, a second-generation walnut stock and forend package for Mossberg pump-action shotguns. The company said the new furniture fits the Mossberg 88, 500, 590, 590A1 and Shockwave. According to WOOX, the V2 is sold three ways: as a stock alone, a forend alone, or as a complete stock-and-forend kit. The company listed the full kit at $439.
Ben Fleming, CEO of WOOX USA, said the redesign targets handling speed and recoil control.
With a precision-fit walnut stock and forend, the new Gladiatore V2 enhances the performance of your Mossberg pump-action shotgun,” Fleming said. “This upgraded design reduces length-of-pull helping to get you on target faster and stay on target longer. Improved ergonomics, balanced feel, and a secure grip give you control you can rely on when it matters most. Each piece is individually handcrafted from selected Claro-grade American walnut in limited runs.
WOOX said the V2 carries three specific design changes from the prior version: a reworked wraparound grip designed to seat itself in the hand, more aggressive checkering meant to reduce the need to reposition the hand between shots, and a new ventilated recoil pad. The company said the combined result is faster, more consistent follow-up shots without losing the sight picture.
The company said the furniture is manufactured in Italy and then assembled and tested in the United States, the same production model WOOX uses across its stock line.
This isn’t WOOX’s first announcement this year. SNW covered the company’s Elegante Sporter bolt-action rifle stock in July, part of the same push to bring hand-finished walnut furniture to more platforms beyond its original rifle stock lineup.
The announcement leaves out one detail present in WOOX’s marketing of the original Gladiatore stock: cross-platform compatibility with Remington’s 870 and Tac-14 shotguns. Product listings for the earlier Gladiatore, still active on several retailer sites, describe it as fitting both the Mossberg 500/590/590A1/88 pattern and Remington’s 870-based guns. This week’s release names only Mossberg models. WOOX did not address in the release whether Remington compatibility is coming in a future version, has been dropped for the V2 line, or is simply being announced separately.
The $439 kit price also marks an increase over at least one previously listed price for a comparable product. A Mossberg 500 stock-and-forend combination from WOOX’s original Gladiatore line was listed by one retailer at $349. That price is substantial relative to some of the shotguns it’s built for. Mossberg’s own pump guns in this lineup typically retail somewhere in the $450 to $700 range new, depending on configuration, meaning a buyer choosing the full Gladiatore V2 kit could be spending nearly as much on furniture as on the gun itself. The Maverick 88 can be had for as little as $250 sometimes.
In the grand scheme of things, walnut furniture remains a comparatively small segment of the pump-shotgun accessory market, which is dominated by synthetic and polymer stocks from companies including Magpul and Hogue. WOOX has built its business on premium wood furniture, initially for bolt-action rifles, and has expanded that approach into shotgun platforms including the Mossberg pump lineup in recent years. The Gladiatore V2 is available now directly from WOOX and through the company’s retail partners.
