Gun violence prevention groups are already gearing up for a new reciprocity battle.
“The biggest threat here is carrying a firearm across state lines without a permit. A piece that I really want to underscore is that law enforcement won’t know who has firearms,” Monisha Henley, senior vice president of government affairs for Everytown for Gun Safety, told ABC News.
At least 26 states, including Florida, Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana and Georgia, have adopted permitless carry rules, meaning no gun permits are necessary to carry concealed weapons if the gun owner meets age requirements and is not prohibited from possessing firearms.
“Gutting state gun laws just makes it easier for dangerous people to carry a hidden weapon with no training, with no questions asked,” Henley said.
“ ‘The biggest threat here is carrying a firearm across state lines without a permit. A piece that I really want to underscore is that law enforcement won’t know who has firearms,’ Monisha Henley, senior vice president of government affairs for Everytown for Gun Safety, told ABC News.”
The biggest threat here is is the use of free speech across state lines without a brain.
The old ‘police won’t know’ BS again
1. Permit or not, contrary to the scare tactic – police already don’t know who is actually carrying a firearm, or a knife, or a hammer, or a machete, or a bomb, or a candy bar… permits or not. Ya seem to think that a permit means police suddenly have x-ray vision or some other ‘super power’ that lets them know who is carrying what at any time. Oh look, I have a drivers license so that means police automatically know when I am driving my car – right? But what if I don’t have a drivers license and I drive my car – unless I get stopped by police for some traffic violation they still don’t know if I have a license or not. The point is stupid, a permit does absolutely zero to let police know who has what. You have encountered people carrying a firearm concealed, you just didn’t know it, if they had a permit did it somehow ’cause you to know they were carrying a concealed firearm?
2. Its no ones business if I or others decide to exercise a constitutional right or not exercise a constitutional right. Permits have never, not one time, let police know who has a firearm. All a permit does is give the states permission for a person to carry a firearm, it does zero to let police know who has a firearm. Just as there is no requirement that one have a ‘permit’ to exercise the 1st Amendment or the other rights, there should be no requirement for a permit for a person to exercise the Second Amendment and in fact in intent left for us by our founders in their writings and federal papers the ‘government’ was never suppose to have any power to require a person submit to a government ‘permission’ requirement to exercise any constitutional right.
The only reason states get away with requiring permits now is because the people have not stopped them from getting away with it. Its not an ‘inherent or constitutional or granted right’ of a state government to require permits, its a ‘power’ states granted unto them selves by claiming they had a ‘right’ to do it. It says ‘We the people’, not “We the government’, and just as ‘we the people’ established a government as servant to the people we can fire or remove your sorry infringing butts too. So the only way states get away with permits now is because the people have not stopped them from getting away with it. So states and the Everytown’esque anti-gun don’t think you have a ‘right’ to require permits because you don’t.
“law enforcement won’t know who has firearms,” Monisha Henley said.”
““Gutting state gun laws just makes it easier for dangerous people to carry a hidden weapon with no training, with no questions asked,” Henley said.”
Law enforcement doesn’t know now who has a firearm or who is carrying at any particular time. Criminals don’t bother with training and they do as they please. If criminals were upstanding citizens they would not be criminals. M. Henley just doesn’t get it. Laws don’t stop crime and criminals ignore laws. Allowing a good citizen to carry across state lines is no more at threat than them driving across a state line. What Henley, et al, don’t know will not hurt them.
” ‘Gutting state gun laws just makes it easier for dangerous people to carry a hidden weapon with no training, with no questions asked,’ Henley said.”
This is pure made up BS.
Dangerous criminal people already carry a ‘hidden weapon’ thousands of times daily across the nation with no permit or ‘training’ in states with the most strict gun laws in the nation and if anything those strict laws have facilitated it because they are only focused on the intent of control of law abiding people.
When I was a police officer many years ago it was assumed that every civilian you came into contact with was carrying – I doubt the training has changed from that mindset. It also means the “bad guy” also doesn’t know if his possible victim may or may not have a weapon that can be used for his or his family’s safety. I then as a peace officer and now at the age of 82 still stand with the guy carrying concealed.
Maybe the dingbat is right. If every cop was in the dark about a potential victims armed status, then I believe those cops would be much nicer to the folks they interact with on a day to day basis. After all, many armed citizens treat everyone like they would want to be treated because the A-hole you are talking with could very well make it NOT your day.
The comments being made by Evreytown and other anti gun groups about not knowing who has a handgun and is carrying is just as true today in all constitutional carry states. Here in AZ, you do not need a license to carry concealed. Getting the license is worthwhile because it comes with reciprocity with other states, but is still not required.
Does that make it any less safe for an officer encountering me than another person today?
National reciprocity needed. We have that with drivers licenses and that even goes internationally. Having it with firearms means that someone who has taken the time to get a license will be able to carry without fear of being thrown in jail when they cross a state line. This is especially good for towns on borders such as Az and Ca, or Az and Nm. A police officer will know if a person is pulled over when they look up the license plate if you do have a firearms concealed carry license.
Please quit the fear inducement. Today it is just a likely a person is carrying illegally as they are legally carrying.
get it passed and you know where will posture that they will not recognize it.
If we get it passed (and I really hope that happens!) the laws of each state will still apply.
They will use that against us, like how NJ bans hollow-point ammunition. So, it will not be a great victory until we get *everyone* on the same page…
The premise of national reciprocity is that you have a permit already in the state you reside in It will just be excepted in all 50 states compare it to a drivers license. Nothing changes with people who have permits it would get more complicated in states with constitutional carry, you would probably have to get a concealed carry permit
Screw Everytown for Gun Safety…….they’re facists!!!
And racists, and misogynistic, and nazis, and homophobs, and liars, and connivers, and… and…
Anti Gunners push for more and more Gun Control, but only against law abiding citizens. Meanwhile felons who use firearms are allowed free on cashless bail. Can’t think of anything more insane than letting criminals go free while innocent people are punished.
In states that suppress CC permits, a lot of people carry, starting with their criminal element. WHAT makes that dingbat think the police know who’s carrying now? Anywhere? As a sheriff from a state with registered CC said : ” That gives us a list of who probably won’t be creating problems.”
” A piece that I really want to underscore is that law enforcement won’t know who has firearms,”
They have no idea now you dumb twit.
“The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” is pretty blunt; no wiggle room (except damned lawyers). They used to be called shysters…corrupt lawyers who argue anything illegal for a dollar.
The government doesn’t need to know everything about the public if anything we need no more about their dirty dealings.
Of course, police don’t know which criminals are carrying now, do they?
“Gutting state gun laws just makes it easier for dangerous people to carry a hidden weapon with no training, with no questions asked,” Henley said.
Notice how he mentions “dangerous people” and not criminals? That’s because as far as he’s concerned ALL armed citizens are dangerous. What if they refuse to obey??
Bullshit get your facts straight:)
Go, Donald!
I love how Ms Henley ominously intones that police won’t know who has guns, as if this is some requirement for public safety, and as if this situation doesn’t already obtain in 26 states, i.e., most of the country.
Don’t people know that anti gun anything is in fact fasciast?
