NeeDoh Stress Ball Ballistics: .22 LR Edition

NeeDohs, dumpling squishies, and other stress ball-like squishy toys are insanely popular right now, explained my sister. “You should shoot them on video; I bet it’ll get a ton of views!” \

I told her that the Shooting News Weekly YouTube channel doesn’t really have a lot of children watching our gun reviews. Do it anyway, she says. Adults are collecting these things, too.

Well . . . why not? Up first we shot a 2-inch cube and a cute little teddy bear with CCI Mini Mag Segmented Hollow Point 22 LR rounds. The results really surprised me!

Watch the video above and keep an eye out as we step up the ballistic power in each subsequent test. You know, for science.

  1. Silly people, ding silly things…and they have zero clue of how this kind of crap is actually hurting the 2A world.

        1. I proved you point by asking what you meant by shooting NeeDohs hurting the 2A world?

It was a pretty broad non-descriptive claim that the 2A world would be hurt.

But ok then. So you didn’t actually have a point, just a general non-descriptive declaration of keyboard attraction.

  2. The outer material on actual Needohs is thermoplastic rubber (TPR). (on knock off brands they are usually TPR also but of a lower quality)

In actual NeeDohs the filling is ‘food grade’ polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), or a jelly like substance made from an enhanced PVA, (for example the ‘gummy bear’ needoh has this jelly like substance) or 100 % Maltose in a jelly like form (the cube nedoh uses this) [note: cornstarch is also an ingredient]. Its non-toxic and hypo-allergenic. The PVA is similar to an elmers glue formulation.

Many of the off brand (knock-off) types on Amazon are usually filled with a jelly like substance to mimic the feeling of the original, but is comprised of chemicals that may not be as safe and may be toxic in some cases. But it varies because some of the off brand types do use a formulation like the original NeeDohs.

    Anyway…

(from the CCI web site: CCI Mini-Mag Segmented HP, 22 LR, 40 Grain, Segmented Hollow Point, 1235 fps.

The energy physics, on simulation – for the cube ‘needoh’ (amazon knock off) : Using the known specs for TPR and the known specs for the PVA in actual needohs (because we don’t know what the knock offs are actually filled with), the size of the cube, and the known weight and shape and material and size of the CCI .22 round, estimating the distance from the video – for the round fragments to have been captured for the whole bullet (no exit of fragments according to the video) – the bullet would have entered the ‘needoh’ (amazon knock off) at ~ 913 FPS minimum (at ~980 FPS and above the bullet would have passed through and exited.]

    1. Lordy Booger, that’s a lot. I’ll just push back on the velocity thing and say that, no, it would not have exited at 980 FPS or over, because it hit that NeeDoh at nearly 1,300 FPS. I chronographed 1,310 FPS on that shot and I was only like 15 feet away from it.
