‘That Doesn’t Happen in Other Countries’ – School Shooting in Austria Leaves At Least 10 Dead

Barack Obama once famously claimed that mass shootings never happened in other countries. Then again, he also said if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor, so do with that what you will. In Austria second largest city this morning, a crazed lunatic opened fire in a high school, killing at least ten and wounding dozens more. And in the usual cowardly style, he offed himself as police arrived. He didn’t want a fair fight.

While it’s very early and details aren’t fully known, security pros will no doubt have questions about how the killer entered the school building. Did officials keep their doors locked during the school day, allowing only limited access of vetted persons? Did they have glass laminates installed to thwart shooting out glass at entrance doors to gain entry?

Were there any school resource officers or armed staff members present? In short, were universal best practices followed to secure schools from attacks like this one? Did the parents hold school officials accountable for school security and safety?

Here’s some video from a second floor classroom as the scene unfolded.

The NY Daily News has the story . . .

Eight people were killed at a school in the Austrian city of Graz on Tuesday, authorities said.

Police said they deployed to the school after shots were heard there.

The Interior Ministry said there were several fatalities but did not specify how many. Police said there were also injuries, without specifying a number.

Reuters has additional details:

A gunman killed at least nine people at a secondary school in the southern Austrian city of Graz on Tuesday, in the worst school shooting in the country’s modern history.

Police said the attacker also died and that they were working on the assumption that he had operated alone. National broadcaster ORF said about 30 people were wounded. Austrian media reported that most of the dead were pupils at the school.

Police did not publicly identify the killer, but Austrian media cited unconfirmed reports saying he was a former pupil who had entered the school and opened fire on pupils.

    1. Yeah Geoff I thought other countries, especially European, were totally immune and shielded from this sort of criminal activity. It is sad that events of this sort are happening anywhere; but, restricting the rights of good citizens is definitely not a solution.

“Police said they deployed to the school after shots were heard there.”

    which is wayyy too late.

If there had been, oh I don’t know, maybe some armed citizens there a quicker response from them being already on-scene may have prevented death and injury while waiting for police to arrive. But, ya know, when you disarm your citizens making them unable to defend them selves and others leaving them no chance at all its usually wayyyyyy to late by the time the police deploy after shots are heard.

  2. The European atheists are just the atheists here. They both don’t believe in locking up the mentally ill. Until the become so sick that they harm others.
