Homicides and other types of violent crime are dropping precipitously in the crime-ridden city of Baltimore. It started shortly after voters fired their progressive Soros-backed prosecutor in 2022—and experts say that’s no coincidence.
Baltimore’s homicide rate soared after state’s attorney Marilyn Mosby took office in 2015 on a progressive platform of refusing to prosecute low-level crimes while aggressively charging police officers including those involved in the death of Freddie Gray, a black man who died from injuries sustained while in custody. Those officers were ultimately acquitted, but Mosby’s policies still had a chilling effect on the Baltimore Police Department. Arrests plummeted under Mosby’s watch as homicides jumped from an average of 229 per year before she took office to 333 per year during her eight years as state’s attorney, according to figures compiled by the Heritage Foundation.
By July 2022, Baltimore voters had enough. Mosby lost her primary election to her Democratic challenger, Ivan Bates, who pledged to reverse her progressive non-prosecution policies and put in place harsher penalties for repeat violent offenses and illegal gun possession.
By all appearances, it worked.
In 2022, Mosby’s last year in office, Baltimore saw 334 homicides across the city. The next year, under Bates’s watch, that number dropped to 262. In 2024, it dropped further to 202 homicides. And during the first half of 2025, Baltimore saw just 68 homicides, a 62 percent drop from the same timeframe in 2022. Auto thefts are also down 34 percent, robberies are down 22 percent, and arson is down 10 percent in Baltimore so far in 2025 compared to the same timeframe last year.
“The numbers don’t lie,” Maryland Public Policy Institute fellow Sean Kennedy told the Washington Free Beacon. “Ivan Bates’s model of targeting the most violent or violence-prone offenders (gun carrying criminals) is the primary driver of Baltimore’s miraculous success.”
“Homicides only started dropping when Bates came in and signaled that carrying guns meant prison,” Kennedy said.

Strictly enforce the existing laws on the books and crime will go down. A basic premise Liberals can’t or refuse to comprehend.
We’ve had this data for decades. You have to assume that they don’t want crime to go down (until it gets really bad, then you have the cycle Shire-man outlines).
Liberals ignore problems and refuse to enforce the law = numbers go up.
Their constituents, the ones that are still 10% sane at least, get fed up.
Liberals start enforcing laws = numbers go down.
Their constituents, that other 90% of lunatics, start screaming about the injustice of laws.
Liberals stop enforcing the laws = numbers go back up.
It’s a vicious cycle of leftist stupidity that won’t end until they’ve destroyed western civilization.

The late, great conservative humorist P.J. O’Rourke said of socialism, “To grasp the true meaning of socialism, imagine a world where everything is designed by the post office, even the sleaze.”
P.J. hated socialism because no one was in charge of anything. The ‘government’ rarely ‘governed’ anything except that which could be manipulated into benefitting the governing elite. The rest was farmed out to the ‘non-profit/industrial complex,’ which doesn’t care about maintaining what it’s managing because there’s no incentive to do so.
Think about Zohran Mamnani’s ‘government-run grocery stores.’ Chicago ‘studied’ the matter, paying a non-profit group that paid a for-profit consultant company, which determined it wouldn’t work.
The only ‘city-run’ grocery store in the country is in Kansas City. The problem is that it’s not run by the city. It’s run by a for-profit subsidiary that needs gobs of cash from the city to stay open.
Writing in Persuasion, Jacob Savage relates a trip he took to Salt Lake City, where he took his kids to Wheeler Farm in Murray, Utah. The 75-acre farm was originally homesteaded in the late 1800s and turned over to Salt Lake County in the 1970s.
It was jarring, in the best way, to see a public space so well-run. Admission is free. Kids walk right up to cows, goats, sheep, and chickens. They climb on old tractors, go on wagon rides, race through open fields.
After a busy morning, we bought $2 Uncrustables and $1.50 popsicles from the gift shop and sat for lunch. At one point, my 3-year-old wandered over to a chicken coop that had been converted into a playhouse. He was inside when a mom rushed over—her son was bleeding. He’d been nicked by a loose plank that had come down in the coop.
The mostly college-aged staff ushered the kids out and surveyed the damage. Coming from Los Angeles, I expected some level of generalized freaking out: yellow tape, an incident report, something. Instead, what happened was even stranger: one of the employees wandered out to find a nail gun and returned to fix the problem plank on the spot.
A week later, Savage took his kids to the city-owned Los Angeles Zoo. The contrast was beyond shocking.
Admission for the family of four was $98. ‘Exhibits that are supposed to be open are inexplicably closed. Every fifty feet there’s another kiosk that’s boarded up, another sign for something that’s been ‘coming soon’ for years,’ writes Savage.
