July Gun Sales Dip Below 1 Million for the First Time in Over Five Years

July 2025 NICS adjusted background checks gun sales

Well, it finally happened. The gun industry had been on a hell of a run for almost the last six years. The NSSF’s adjusted background check totals — the best (though almost certainly understated) measure of gun sales in the US — had jumped up over the 1 million per month threshold more than five years ago and looked like it had established a new floor. Until July, that is. And while the actual number of sales was no doubt higher (for reasons NSSF explains below) the trend in the adjusted NICS numbers is what’s really instructive.

The numbers always dip in the summer and dip, they did last month. The NSSF’s Mark Oliva had this to say about that:

July’s figures of 978,731 background checks for the sale of a firearm at retail beings an end to the streak of over 1 million background checks each month that ran for nearly six years. Summer months routinely show lower background check figures than other times of the year and we’ve watched as the background check figures came down from astronomical highs several years ago. There are factors that contribute to this, including relief of concern that politics would deny some from being able to exercise Second Amendment rights to purchase a firearm of one’s choice and economic uncertainty. Firearm manufacturers continue to work to produce high-quality, safe, and reliable firearms to meet the demand of discerning customers across the nation.

Here’s the NSSF’s press release announcing the July statistics . . .

The July 2025 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 978,731 is a decrease of 8.1 percent compared to the July 2024 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1,064,790.

For comparison, the unadjusted July 2025 FBI NICS figure of 1,936,621 reflects a 4.2 percent decrease from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 2,021,235 in July 2024.

Additional insights on the month-over-month NICS data from GunBroker, NICS Reporting & Analysis (June 2025 data), available in the member portal under Industry Research.

    • Top-5 States for Adjusted NICS Checks:           TX, FL, CA, PA, VA
    • Top-5 States for FBI NICS Handgun Checks:    TX, FL, CA,  PA, TN
    • Top-5 States for FBI NICS Long Gun Checks:   TX, FL, CA, PA, VA

Please note: Twenty eight states as of the July 21, 2025 update currently have at least one qualified alternative permit, which under the Brady Act allows the permit-holder, who has undergone a background check to obtain the permit, to purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer without a separate additional background check for that transfer. The number of NICS checks in these states does not include these legal transfers based on qualifying permits and NSSF does not adjust for these transfers.

The adjusted NICS data were derived by subtracting out NICS purpose code permit checks and permit rechecks used by states for CCW permit application checks as well as checks on active CCW permit databases. NSSF started subtracting permit rechecks in February 2016.

Though not a direct correlation to firearms sales, the NSSF-adjusted NICS data provide an additional picture of current market conditions. In addition to other purposes, NICS is used to check transactions for sales or transfers of new or used firearms.

It should be noted that these statistics represent the number of firearm background checks initiated through the NICS. They do not represent the number of firearms sold or sales dollars. Based on varying state laws, local market conditions and purchase scenarios, a one-to-one correlation cannot be made between a firearm background check and a firearm sale.

  1. The US is bulging at the seams with guns and ammo.

The next big wave will come when full auto becomes over the counter without a prescription..

  2. In April 2025, 24 states had “at least one qualified alternative permit, which under the Brady Act allows the permit-holder, who has undergone a background check to obtain the permit, to purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer without a separate additional background check for that transfer.”
By July 2025, that number increased to 28.
Since “the number of NICS checks in these states does not include these legal transfers based on qualifying permits and NSSF does not adjust for these transfers” I’m willing to attribute the decrease to under-reporting.

  3. “Please note: Twenty eight states as of the July 21, 2025 update currently have at least one qualified alternative permit, which under the Brady Act allows the permit-holder, who has undergone a background check to obtain the permit, to purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer without a separate additional background check for that transfer.”

I live in one of those 28 states and since July 21, 2025 I have purchased 2 guns and have friends who have also bought guns in that time frame and none had to be processed through the NICS. This principle applies to other years too.

  4. I did my part, I found a SIG P220R in .45Auto and a SIG P238 in .380. Both at reasonable prices and in outstanding condition, the P238 came with 8 6-round magazines as a bonus.

Next steps…federal grand jury [ordered] ‘established’ to investigate the Obama led traitorous acts and seditious conspiracy of Russia Collusion Hoax: Here Comes the FIND OUT Phase: Russia Collusion Hoax GRAND JURY Is ON.

DOJ leaks reveal that U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has green-lighted a grand jury to investigate the Russia Collusion hoax.

EXCLUSIVE: Attorney General Pam Bondi directed her staff Monday to act on the criminal referral from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard related to the alleged conspiracy to tie President Donald Trump to Russia, and the Department of Justice is now opening a grand jury investigation into the matter, Fox News Digital has learned.

Bondi personally ordered an unnamed federal prosecutor to initiate legal proceedings and the prosecutor is expected to present department evidence to a grand jury, which would allow the department to secure a potential indictment, according to a letter from Bondi reviewed by Fox News Digital and a source familiar with the investigation.

genus ‘fleeing felonious’: Texas House Approves Arrest Warrants for Democrats Who Fled to Illinois to Block Redistricting Vote.

In a bold move to uphold the rule of law and ensure democratic processes aren’t hijacked by partisan theatrics, the Texas House has passed a motion to issue arrest warrants for the runaway Democrats who fled to Illinois. These lawmakers abandoned their posts in a desperate attempt to block the adoption of constitutionally redrawn U.S. House maps — maps supported by President Donald Trump and designed to reflect the will of Texas voters. Rather than engage in the legislative process, these Democrats chose to obstruct it, and now face the consequences of their dereliction of duty.

On Monday, the Texas House passed a motion to issue arrest warrants for the Democrats who left Texas for Illinois.

Abbott set a 3pm deadline for Monday to return to their home state, which many Democrats missed. They now face removal from office.

When the race bait fake news needs a boost, they invent even more of it: Cincinnati Journo Just HAPPENS to Find PRISTINE KKK Flyer While Out for a Walk.

The timing of this seems so incredibly … convenient that this writer is laying down the marker now: this is a hoax. Probably perpetrated by the guy who just so happened to ‘stumble across’ a KKK flyer in a city that is in the spotlight for a racially-motivated attack..

[note: incredibly clean, fresh off the press like new, only one in the city, litter PRISTINE KKK Flyer just happens to be found by a ‘journalist’ that just so happens to decide to go for a walk that he never does to the very area where ‘flyer’ is found]

My fast take is that everyone who thought they needed an AR and a carry gun now have them. Two budget AR manufacturers- Del-ton and Anderson, have gone kaput. I also see a lot of availability and discounts. I guess its good that people aren’t panic buying, now the market will adjust itself.
