Student of the Gun University Making Their Home Study Courses More Accessible Than Ever

Student of the Gun University

Student of the Gun University has made firearms training accessible to everyone with access to the internet. Available now are the distance learning programs for their Pistol and Rifle classes. Students can enroll and start benefiting from a professional firearms training program immediately.

In January of 2024, Student of the Gun University launched their hybrid firearms educational program combining Home Study/Distance Learning with in-person Residency training. “Our distance learning program has been so well received by our students who have stated that it prepared them for our residency training.” said Paul Markel, founder of SOTGU.

“By offering our Home Study courses as stand-alone products, we have lowered the barrier of entry, making professional firearms education available to everyone regardless of where they might live.” commented Jarrad Markel, Solutions Specialist at SOTGU. Jarrad continued, “Naturally, we invite all graduates of the Home Study programs to attend Residency training, elevating their experience to the next level.”

The SOTGU Home Study programs include a highly structured and guided study program that boasts a dedicated, physical course manual shipped to the student’s door, digital lessons with quizzes, and a final exam. Video lessons are included for demonstrations and to reinforce the written curriculum. For a limited time, save 30% when you buy the P201 Pistol and R201 Rifle Home Study courses together.

The benefits of Home Study include:

  • Start now – Start learning immediately; check your email after purchase for instructions on how to access The Student Portal

  • Save time – You do not have to search the internet for how-to videos before attending Residency

  • Reduce Training Scars – We filmed a professional, higher-level Home Study program so you will only learn the correct tactics. This means less time will be spent overcoming training scars at Residency.

  • Retain – The Home Study course is designed to deliver world-class education while priming you for Residency. While at Residency, it will not be your first time hearing some of the material so you can digest and retain the information better.

  • Review – After you graduate from Residency, you can still review the Home Study at your leisure. This aids in the retention of the information.

  • Topics Include: The Fundamentals of Handgun Marksmanship, How to Run the Machine Like a Professional, Martial Tactics and Mindset, Sights and Optics on Pistols, Selecting Ammunition and Accessories, a Full Glossary of Professional Terminology, and Much More.

Student of the Gun University is a higher-level educational institute providing an unparalleled learning experience for adult learners in all firearms-related topics. Our Senior Small Arms & Tactics Instructor, Professor Paul Markel, brings more than three decades of teaching experience to the table.

  1. I’ve read reviews from individuals that have taken some of their live classes. All were quite positive. Particularly their ‘Instructor Development Course.”

That said, they could do a little better with their training/course listing page. They have classes listed as being on “Sale” and MSRP with strikethrough. It comes off looking like a combination of lame internet marketing (“Use this one weird trick…”) and a ‘As Seen On TV’ ad (“But wait! There’s more!”).

    1. We have amazing students who have been generous in sharing feedback, both what is great and what could be better, all of which have been used in improving the student experience of the Home Study program.

Thanks for the feedback on how we need to improve the training/course listing page. Can you share specific recommendations with me, accompanied by screenshots? My direct email is jarrad@studentofthegun.com.

The best I can understand from your final paragraph is that you would be more willing to purchase the products currently on sale if they were NOT on sale. Is that true, or am I misunderstanding your message? By the way, it’s not listed on sale in the traditional “But wait! There’s more!” manner of MSRP strikethrough that you mentioned in your message, but if you package the P201 Pistol and R201 Rifle Home Study courses, there is a discount for bundling the products.

At any rate, I look forward to your site improvement recommendations. If/when you purchase and complete a Home Study course, please also send feedback for improvement. You will notice that all our communications are two-way; a human is always on the other side.

  2. As of July 2024 – I counted over 200 sources for firearms training via the internet that was either free or by purchasing. Most of the stuff in the purchased courses was already available for free from free sources. Sure, they vary some according to the way its taught by who ever is presenting it but the fundamentals and a lot of the advanced stuff was still the same in the free courses. If a person can attend a course in person, its even better. But one thing about all of them no matter if free or pay, if you don’t keep up some practice of the ‘techniques’ on your own also, what you did learn in the course can become ‘rusty’ and slip into the ‘oh, I forgot about that’ parts of your skills.

    1. I love what you said, “… if you don’t keep up some practice … what you did learn in the course can become ‘rusty’…” You are absolutely correct, and this is something we stress heavily in our training because physical skills are perishable, and shooting well is a physical skill.

I also appreciate the mention of 200+ sources of training via the Internet. That is one of the primary reasons we launched the Home Study courses (with more in development). Some students were frustrated with the overwhelming amount of online material; deciphering what translates well into the real world and what introduces training scars can be a full-time job. Because our students are motivated, we KNOW they purchase the in-person Residency and immediately search the internet for “how to practice” before attending. The Home Study program gives our students an immediate learning path that is available on demand in the palm of their hand, translates to the real world, and serves as a place to review the material after attending Residency.

We launched the Home Study for students who purchased Residency classes over a year ago. It would be ideal if 100% of people who go through Home Study would attend Residency, though we know it is either impossible or not a priority for everyone. We still want to pass along the decades of experience our Senior Instructor has accumulated. The Home Study programs greatly enhance our student’s experience while serving every armed citizen and their families.

I hope to see you in a Residency class in the future. Remember, you are a beginner once, a student for life.

  3. Turns out you can get good firearms information on the internet. Having a curated information source constructed by knowledgeable professionals has been needed for quite some time… Student of The Gun delivered it.

  4. Training is one of the most important aspects of firearms ownership. There are a number of different types of school’s. I choose to break them down into two categories, fighting and shooting. SOTGU is a fighting school.

With the home study curriculum, you will get a great introduction and become familiar with Paul and Jarrad’s type of instruction. You will learn the basics of thinking and fighting with a gun in your hands.

The online course is a great starting point for those who have busy schedules. However I highly recommend attending the in person classes as soon as you can. True learning happens under the watchful eye of a competent instructor.

Go sign up now. Maybe I will see you at one of the many SOTGU in person classes.

  5. It’s great to see that people can get access to high quality firearms instruction at home. The interwebs are cluttered with videos from self-aggrandizing tacti-tards. I am extremely excited to see that there’s now a way for people who want to take the martial application of firearms seriously to cut through the noise and receive a structured way to becoming more proficient with their tools. Having SOTG effect more people makes the world a safer place.

  6. I’ve been to 5 SOTG classes, including the Rifle course twice. The training is fantastic, and emphasizes “thinking with a gun in your hand” instead of reflexive responses to perceived threats. This approach enhances safety and decreases risk of a negligent discharge or shooting an unintended target in a real-world defensive scenario. The home study program covers the foundational concepts covered in the live training and shows an instructor walking through drills. For me, the home study had value on its own, but was especially valuable as a precursor to the live training. SOTG has become my main source of firearms training.

    1. Thanks, Anthony. Your feedback is appreciated; it is great to see another testimony of the Home Study having its own merit, while also being a valuable enhancement to the Residency training. We look forward to seeing you in another class soon.
