[Sociologist Harel] Shapira’s interest in gun culture grew out of research for his 2017 book, “Waiting for José: The Minutemen’s Pursuit of America,” a study of a volunteer militia group that patrolled the U.S. border, intent on keeping out illegal immigrants from Mexico.
A member of that group who was also a National Rifle Association instructor took him shooting. The encounter revealed what Shapira describes as an “experiential gap” between his own unease with firearms and the instructor’s comfort and enthusiasm.
How, he wondered, could two people in the same world experience the same object — a gun — in such profoundly different ways? The question would come to undergird his research.
Shapira uses statistics sparingly in his new book, letting qualitative research carry much of the argument. But he points to one striking shift. In 1999, only about a quarter of American gun owners said self-defense was their primary reason for owning a firearm; hunting ranked first. Today, 72 percent cite self-defense, while hunters, he writes, are a “stark minority.”
In Shapira’s telling, firearms training operates as a feedback loop. Fear brings people to the classroom, and the course gives them new reasons to be afraid.

I read the article. This liberal PhD white man, like so many of them, has a very difficult time explaining to himself. Why is it, that a black man is in the business of being a firearms instructor???

Guns for me but not for you.
That’s an oversimplification, but there’s some truth to it. As with most things, people want to identify a single cause, but if you dig into the issue, there are almost always multiple contributing factors. The more you’re exposed to something, the more it will occupy your thoughts. If you get involved in modern “gun culture,” you’ll inevitably encounter more stories about violence and self-defense.
It may be considered so amazing to some people that they simply cannot comprehend or accept it, that having more information and accurate information about how violent the collectivist/statist/authoritarians have become (along with their parasite classes of welfare recipients and government “workers”) leads one to desiring the ability to defend one’s self.
Astonishing, isn’t it? They are simply unable to accept the evidence right in front of them, even with their own eyes and ears, that they have to turn to abject nonsense to explain it to themselves.
Should they fail to find an alternate explanation for reality their own little fantasy world will shatter and that is simply unacceptable. Some people would rather die than have a metric sh!t ton of evidence change their tiny little indoctrinated minds.

No, they’re not more afraid. They now realize how much fear constrained them before and they’re more willing to speak about it. Because now they don’t have to fear.

Here’s the problem with the so called ‘sociology’ ‘soft science’ and its ‘qualitative research’ – its not based on any fact or objective view but instead relies on the subjective interpretation and biases of the ‘researcher’.
You can see this subjective interpretation and bias of this ‘researcher’ form in the linked missive, with this:

His own personal ‘unease’ is driving his need to name it something and he calls it an “experiential gap”. And while that ‘gap’ in experience with firearms might be there, it sets up a ‘one vs the other’ thing that needs to be justified and the rest of the time this ‘researcher’ is only seeking out that which supports things that fits into this ‘need’. In other words, typical left wing confirmation bias is driving this ‘qualitative research’. Anytime a ‘researcher’ sets up a ‘one vs the other’ thing ‘need’ in their research it destroys objectivity and introduces confirmation bias. This is why ‘qualitative research’ is a bogus methodology for any science ‘hard’ or ‘soft’

Its not giving them new reasons to be afraid, the reason was there already and its not new – their eyes are opened to what they never bothered to notice before but now they know and sense it can happen and want to prepare and in fact in the linked missive the others cited are saying exactly that. For example, there is this “The high school teacher feared that his mentally unstable ex-spouse might try to harm him. The truck driver worried about his safety on the road.”
In reference to the whole of the missive at the link; The ‘fear’ of what can be is what drove them to arm their selves, the reality of what will be if they can not adequately defend themselves if needed is what opened their eyes. These are not new reasons, and now they need to be prepared if it comes for them and they sense it. In other words its ordinary people converting fear into information to manage uncertainty and protect themselves because they sense a danger is there now.

Its because the so called ‘sociology’ ‘soft science’ and its ‘qualitative research’ by left wingers using ‘I feelz’ started driving and facilitating a new generation of crazy and crime and violence by down playing moral responsibilities and restraints and removing lower level legal restraints via ‘policy’ across the country in the name of ‘social justice’ during the Clinton administration and through these years since it became a fixture becoming cemented into our society under the Obama administration then Biden came along and it came out of the shadows more, and it became a ‘threat always there’ and people sense its always there now even if they are not victims now. For example, in 1998 a person was targeted as a potential victim of a violent crime by a criminal at least once for every 8 hours the possible victim spent in public view – today its a person is targeted as a potential victim of violent crime perpetrated by a criminal OR a ‘mentally ill person’ OR ‘left winger social justice protestor’ at least 5 times for every six hours they spend in public view and up to 12 times for every six hours they spend in public view in a large urban environment. In other words its all around us today, and people sense its there even if not victims now.
