How to Grip Your Pistol…Correctly! [VIDEO]

Few shooting disciplines have evolved as much over the last century as “handgunning” — the art and practice of firing a handgun. We aren’t shooting bladed or one-handed. We aren’t tea-cupping our gun. We aren’t shooting Weaver anymore. The correct way to grip a pistol provides maximum recoil control and a natural aim to deliver fast, flat, accurate shots on target.

Don’t miss the video above to get the rundown on the modern pistol grip, optimized for putting rounds where you want them quickly and efficiently.

  1. Good overview. Additional things to add/call out, IMHO:
    1. Primary hand knuckles should be directly under the trigger guard. This allows you to “point” at your target with your trigger finger. This can be an issue with larger frame/smaller hands, and may impact other parts of the grip.
    2. “Flag” your primary thumb (raise it) to really open up the support hand side of the grip for the “meaty” part of the support hand.
    3. After your support hand has made contact, press down with your flagged primary thumb. This does two things: (1) Takes any external safety off safe and (2) engages a tendon in your wrist that greatly reduces muzzle flip (preventing a loose noodle wrist grip)

I like the rotation of the elbows out. It causes a left/right press on the gun, which I prefer over a push/pull or death-squeeze.

There’s a lot of articles written about “pad of finger” vs “knuckle” vs “all the way in”. I prefer pad (more sensitive), however, for new shooters, pressing the trigger straight back may be easier with the knuckle.

    $0.02…

  2. Actually, this was a pretty good video overview ‘lesson’ Jeremy. Its the same way I teach new shooters when I have someone new who wants to get into guns and asks me to show them, except I usually start with the draw first because that’s where the master grip starts (if they carry) and they can get up on the beaver tail from the beginning (I want them to be used to this beaver tail connection from the beginning, become natural, its important) – and we refine from there. Not sure why there would be hateful comments expected, you just gave for free a condensed version of what some people will pay up to a couple of hundred dollars to get training for.
