Personal Defense Tip: Don’t Insert Yourself Into Stupid Situations

If you’re reading this, odds are good you’ve heard of John Farnam’s Rules of Stupid before. Basically, don’t go stupid places with stupid people and do stupid things. That may seem pretty obvious—as in, don’t go wandering through a dark alley at night, butt-naked and whistling Dixie—but there’s a lot more to it than that. Some places that qualify as stupid might not appear that way at first. But have no fear, we’re here to help, and we have an example for you fresh from the newswire.

Thanks to the weird way the news works now, this event took place over a week ago before it started making the rounds. It took place in Taylor, Michigan, part of the Detroit metro area where the rate of violent crime is higher the national average (try to contain your shock). Within that city lies the Southland Mall, a spot with its own reputation for violence.

Here’s the story from Law & Crime:

A Michigan woman shopping at a Kids Foot Locker with children allegedly went berserk after someone behind her in line called her a “broke b—” because her card got declined, leading to her stabbing a teenager who was at the store…

But wait, there’s more.

[Stabbing victim Suniya] Jenkins insists she was not the one who reportedly made the statement about the suspect being a “broke b—” but says she did enter the Foot Locker to see what was going on after hearing a commotion.

“I think it was unfair to me to get stabbed,” Jenkins told WJBK…. “To start, I was stabbed four times and I have a punctured lung right now.”

news reports of stabbing at Michigan mall
News reports appear to agree on one thing: the victim got involved when she knew there was trouble. (Photo: FOX 2 Detroit)

The gist of the story is that “someone” mocked a 40-year-old woman in the store after her card was declined. That woman had her children with her and apparently didn’t appreciate the commentary:

“As the argument got verbal, she put her hand in her purse and proceeded to tell me she was going to shoot me,” Jenkins alleged. “I did not see or even know I was stabbed until after the physical altercation.”

I’m just guessing here, but I’m going to say it’s possible the stabbing victim said something like, “Then shoot me, b—-.” Again, that’s just a hunch. Unsurprisingly, the attacker…attacked her, pulling what Fox 2 Detroit reports as a kitchen knife. Stabby stupidity then ensued.

Before you accuse me of making light of a serious situation—and really, you should expect that from me—keep in mind the factors at play here. In numerous news reports of the incident, the victim here relays to reporters that she was “walking by” when she heard the ruckus. And that was her cue to insert herself into the situation.

It’s worth noting some eyewitnesses report the victim was already in the store and was, indeed, the person who made the snarky comment to the soon-to-be-knife-wielding attacker. Are eyewitnesses inherently flaky on details? Yes, but that’s really beside the point here.

Whether the 19-year-old victim inserted herself by 1) entering the store and approaching the scene of what would soon become the crime or 2) was already in line and ran her mouth isn’t the primary issue here. First and foremost is the simple issue that she made herself available for stabbing. And before you say, oh no, now you’re victim-shaming, let’s be real. It’s always stupid to provoke a high-risk incident and even stupider to decide to wander into one.

“So what,” you say, “Am I supposed to flee the immediate area, tossing my purchases wildly as I go?” Yes, basically. When things are going south, get your happy ass out of there. Avoid the confrontation entirely. And don’t say I didn’t warn you.

It’s true that it isn’t normal for a grown woman to be carrying a kitchen knife in her purse. There’s also no way at all to know who around you is armed, legally, illegally, or irrationally weirdly. A kitchen knife, ice pick, skateboard…they’ve all been used as deadly weapons at some point.

As for the fact the victim admits that her attacker warned her, well, that’s another issue. Is it entirely possible the victim couldn’t have gotten away in time? Of course, but it’s just as likely the 19-year-old girl not only stood her ground, but got in the woman’s face after the woman threatened to shoot her. Surely there’s video footage of what happened out there and if anyone has it, I’d love to see it. Please post a link in the comments.

So now it’s time to add to the Rules of Stupid. The fourth part should be, “Don’t stay in stupid places when stupid things are developing.”

Maybe you went somewhere you don’t consider to be stupid at all, although if that place is a mall, I’d beg to differ. Still, you went there, and you either hear the beginning signs of an altercation or it’s taking place right in front of you, in line at the register. Is your first inclination to you whip out your phone and press record? Or do you vacate the premises with all possible speed?

Please tell me you’ll choose the latter.

The circumstances in which you should stick your nose into potentially dangerous business are very few and far between. Generally speaking, that’s a stupid thing to do, and you’re exacerbating it with your refusal to engage your brain and GTFO.

For those brave few (*cough* idiots *cough*) whose defense for being stupid it that God is on your side, I have news for you. God may be with you, but He didn’t call on you to be stupid, He expects you to use the brain He gave you to the best of your abilities.

What, then, did we learn today? If there’s one takeaway, it’s not to insert ourselves into stupid situations. And also, not to run our mouths, initiating and possibly challenge a potential threat when they give us what is, quite frankly, fair warning.

Long story short…walk away. Get out. Your pride, your ego, or your weird sense of “respect” isn’t worth your life. Or put more simply, just don’t be stupid. Let’s leave it at that, shall we?

  1. I feel this more covered by the “rules of culture” than the “rules of stupid.”

    Detroit suburb – check
    Foot Locker – check
    Disrespectful salesperson – check
Reptile brained customers reaction – check
Moron running toward ghetto flavored commotion for the excitement – check

Really it couldn’t have gone any other way.
Maybe the culture is just stupid?

  2. “I did not see or even know I was stabbed until after the physical altercation.”

When you are too stupid to know you are being stabbed…that’s a whole different level of stupid right there. You see this attacker pulling out a knife, get stabbed 4 times (twice neck, the stomach, and thigh) with at least one of those three stabs deep enough to puncture a lung (kinda hard to puncture a lung by getting stabbed in the thigh, so only three others are possible) – but Duh! “I’m a gonna just stand there and get in this crazy persons face and make sure my BS is heard.”

    1. “No, this isn’t the actual knife, but it seems like the most likely type.”

She didn’t say she was stabbed in the chest. To stab upward from the upper stomach area or downward from the lower neck area (on a average sized person), enough to reach the bottom or top of the lung to puncture it – (a little bit depending on the size of the person) the blade was about 6 – 8 inches long (minimum length range). So since it was supposedly a ‘kitchen knife’, I’m guessing a ‘chef style’ ‘prep’ (small ingredient chopping, slicing, and mincing) (or maybe filet or boning) knife with an industry standard, either, 6 inch or 8 inch blade minimum but it could have been larger. Its possible though it could have also been a steak knife as they can also have 6 inch blades.

        1. First thought: Likely knife choices?
          Cutco or Ginsu.

Second thought: “…her attacker warned her…”
Even rattlesnakes give you ample notice.

    2. Geoff "I'm getting too old for this crap" PR

“When you are too stupid to know you are being stabbed…”

Wrong, not knowing you have been cut is a sign of a *very* sharp knife…

      1. yeah but to be stabbed and not just cut, 4 times, stabbed deeply enough to puncture a lung takes some thrust pressure, and hand movement with a knife in it, is kinda hard to miss no matter how sharp the blade is. I doubt the attacker was some sort of hollywood movie style ‘ninja’ and it actually takes some pressure to thrust a knife deep like that.

        1. As tempting as it is to assume a lack of awareness of injury is the result of stupidity, this is one thing I am unwilling to allege. I’ve heard multiple accounts of people who were stabbed and merely thought they were punched — and what’s more, when you’re in an altercation and adrenaline is pumping, your ability to understand is even more hampered.

Also, the individual stabbing can happen ridiculously scary fast — I sincerely doubt anyone getting stabbed is keeping a careful count of each stabbing.

Do not underestimate how scary and deadly knives are. This is one of the reasons why they are so terrifying.

It’s also a major reason you need to leave ASAP as soon as the situation gives even a hint of the possibility of things going stabby!

          1. Stupid saw the knife.

Said the attacker threatened to shoot her then pulled out a knife (from purse).

Little puzzling on that. Did the attacker actually say gonna shoot her or gonna stab her?

          2. I think it’s possible stabby victim had tunnel vision. She was hyper-focused on “winning” what she thought was a verbal confrontation, so she never saw the knife coming.

    1. Septum piercing theory is real. It’s akin to bright yellow stripes on an insect. Stay away. Side nose piercings are acceptable.

  3. The sick twisted violent left wing: Satanic Temple Loses Idaho Abortion Lawsuit.

“The Satanic Temple (TST) has made quite a name for itself with its push for abortion. In 2023, they opened an online abortion clinic called the ‘Samuel Alito’s Mom’s Satanic Abortion Clinic’, and last year, they opened the ‘Right to Your Life Satanic Abortion Clinic’ in Virginia.

TST, based in Massachusetts, has made it very clear that they view abortion as a religious right and a ‘sacrament’. …
    …”

[note: In other words, Miner49ers people the Satanists, were claiming, in effect, that ‘unborn-child human sacrifice’ was a religious right and a ‘sacrament’]

    1. TST can claim abortion is a religious right and sacrament all they please; but if they claim to be Christian then they have no Biblical scripture to support their claim. These abortion folk seem to forget or don’t care that abortion is destroying a human life even tho unborn it is still a living human being. If TST does not claim to be Christian, they are still taking a life that is not theirs to take.

  4. Hemp Industry Gearing Up for Battle After Spending Bill Ban.

“The hemp industry is gearing up for a fight after Congress passed a spending bill that included a provision that would essentially ban hemp-derived THC products and others made from the plant.

The bill passed the Senate after it rejected an amendment filed by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) that would have removed the provision from the bill. The House also passed the bill, which President Donald Trump signed into law on Wednesday.

When the provision was made public, it ignited a firestorm of debate over the issue.

The morning after mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s victory, firearms instructors and gun shop owners were flooded with urgent pleas. ‘It’s getting busy because of him,’ said longtime gun safety instructor Lance Dashefsky.

‘I always ask people in class why they want a gun,’ said Dashefsky. ‘And now the answer is Mamdani.’

  6. I once saw a car cut off a motorcycle while pulling into a gas station and, in the distance, I could see the motorcyclist turning around to come back.

I *never* thought to myself “wow, I’m gonna see a fight!” My first thought was to get the F- out of there.

  7. Saying the wrong thing at the right time can and sometimes does turn people into murder victims. Sometimes, silence is indeed golden.

  8. Cities in general are stupid places full of stupid people doing stupid things at stupid times. But just as Dante described the levels of Hell, there are levels of Stupid.

  9. I think you’re missing the point here. Farnum’s Four Rules of Stupid – “Don’t go to stupid places with stupid people at stupid times and do stupid things” – needs a fifth Rule of Stupid, or, maybe, it’s a footnote: “Inherent Stupidity is God’s way of thinning the herd.”

Were it not for the application of Inherent Stupidity – and it’s endemic, especially among some groups – the daily 6 PM “news” broadcast would be 4 minutes long, and 3 of them would be the weather forecast.

  10. “It’s true that it isn’t normal for a grown woman to be carrying a kitchen knife in her purse.”

1 Oct 2024 – 1 Oct 2025: Knives were used by perpetrators to either threaten, or threaten then cut or stab, or without threatening suddenly cut or stab, sometimes resulting in death, in attacks against victims over ~1,800 times daily across the United States. 67% of the perpetrators are black females ages 16 – 30 using a kitchen knife.

    1. Correctin for: “…using a kitchen knife.”

      Should have been …

… using a kitchen knife in ~70% of those attacks.

  11. In the immortal words of the late great Mike Royko, “what’s wrong with victim blaming?”

Most victims play a key role in their own victimization and we do no one any favors by pretending otherwise.

  12. I was taught at a young age that flipping someone off is an invitation to fight. Don’t flip someone off if you aren’t ready to engage in a fight.

  13. My Dad was raised in Chicago’ South Side during the depression. A couple of lessons he hammered into me:

    1. You never lose the fight you avoid.

    2. You never know how far the other person is willing to take it. If you’re thinking a shoving match and they’re thinking kill the SOB— you’re going to get stomped into the ground.
