The Real Problem With Firearm Proliferation is Gun Companies Keep Making Newer, Cooler, Better Guns

As I said, I’ve been concerned with the increase in mass shootings over time and of course a lot of that is driven just by the increasing lethality of weaponry. If you look back to the time when there was an assassination attempt on President Reagan, the shooter there, John Hinkley, was using a six shooter, a revolver, and he managed to shoot six bullets, hit four people, and no one died.

Today, the weapon that he would be using would be a much more powerful weapon, potentially with 15- or 17-round magazine and as Hinkley did, and most of these mass shooters do, they usually fire everything in their gun. So, if you’re shooting, 15 or 17 bullets rather than just six, you’re obviously going to hit more people. And the lethality of this weaponry is significantly greater. In fact, there was a really interesting study done looking at who survives getting shot. And it turns out the more powerful the weapon and the bullet size that hit you the greater the likelihood that you will die from being shot.

So, it’s a growing problem and of course the industry is, is trying to do what Apple did for the iPhone, which is to every year come up with a faster shooting, more lethal weapon so that people will go out and make additional purchases.

It used to be that there would be a family gun that would be in the family for decades. Now, every year the industry wants to come up with new bells and whistles, so people will buy new guns. And the fact that they’re getting more lethal all the time contributes to the problem of mass shooting. So I do think at some point, people will step in, maybe now that there is this rise in political violence we’ve seen with legislators attacked and killed in Minnesota, the attempt on President Trump’s life, and the killing of Charlie Kirk, may focus people on this problem and push them to take some of the commonsense measures that can reduce the level of gun violence in this arena.

  1. Isn’t that every industry?
So his real problem is with marketing and capitalism which means his real-real problem is human nature.

  2. From the article.

“Stanford Law Researchers Discuss How Lobbying Shapes the Political Battlefield”

This is also known as the exercise of your 1st amendment civil right.

I can count on my fingers and toes the numbers of p h d’s who support the bill of rights.

It seems the more education you get the more stupid and a more supporter of tyranny you become.

  3. “So I do think at some point, people will step in, maybe now that there is this rise in political violence we’ve seen with legislators attacked and killed in Minnesota, the attempt on President Trump’s life, and the killing of Charlie Kirk, may focus people on this problem and push them to take some of the commonsense measures that can reduce the level of gun violence in this arena.”

What specific policy changes do you have in mind, professor?

    Just what I thought…

    1. How about, anyone who identifies as trans or in an intimate relationship with a trans be banned from gun possession or ownership?

      Charlie might agree with that…

      1. Never stick it in crazy is good advice in general but no just hit actual crazy with mentally defective and either institutanalize or group home them if they cannot hold a job and move on.

So in other words he advocates that constitutional rights exercise should be decided by those committing ‘political violence’ and conservative law abiding gun owners should be disarmed so they can not defend against the left wing ‘political violence’ perpetrators who want to basically murder all conservatives political or not. Yeah, its basically the same playbook Mao, Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Xi Jinping used, disarm those ‘undesirable’ then kill them.

      1. That’s been the play all along.
Leftist cities let wild criminals run amok and use the chaos they cause to justify taking the guns away from everyone outside of those cities.

A leftist controlled fed let foreign invaders into the southwest by the millions aided by billionaires who wished to undercut the American worker.
Leftist cities refuse to prosecute criminals and shift the blame onto people not living in those cities all while consuming massive taxpayer revenues to fund their schemes.
States like CA grand commercial drivers licenses to illiterate non-citizens so they can kill residents in FL.
Leftist cities enable states to legalize the consumption of physical, emotional and mental poisons increasing the danger for all on the roads and stunting the development of a generation.

Everyday it grows clearer just how long we’ve already been embroiled in a civil war costing real lives and real fortunes. It’s just all been so piecemeal and disjointed hardly anybody noticed when it started but we’re in it.

  4. Stanford Law Professor Dunce Zambrano. Who needs facts when you can just make stuff up and no one questions your verbal garbage?

F.Y.I. Someone collected a LOT of data some years ago in order to ascertain whether certain handgun calibers were significantly more deadly than others. The result was that none of the handgun calibers were significantly more deadly than any other caliber. Oh, and all handgun calibers are “weak sauce” meaning that they are not anywhere nears as deadly as Dunce Zambrano suggested. Someone studied that some years ago as well and determined that your overall odds of dying from a gunshot wound–OF ALL CALIBERS INCLUDING RIFLES AND SHOTGUNS–is just under 20%. That doesn’t sound anywhere near as lethal as Professor Dunce Zambrano claimed.

Like I said in my opening sentence, who needs facts when you can make stuff up?

  5. And yet Charlie Kirk was killed with a bolt action rifle and cartridge dating back to World War One and this particular gun was what you call a “family gun”, belonging to the killer’s grandfather. Tell me how any of your “common sense” legal measures could have prevented this without infringing on the rights of millions of law abiding Americans.

  6. “Today, the weapon that he [Hinckley] would be using would be a much more powerful weapon …”
Hinckley used a .22 LR revolver to shoot Reagan.
Almost all other guns, then and now, are more powerful than a .22 revolver.

  7. Maybe- but Kirk was shot by someone who used his grandpappy’s Mauser bolt action deer gun. The action might be 100 years old (my dad has one that has 1915 stamped on it)

Even the UK allows Mauser bolt action guns.

  8. Apples is constantly making changes to its operating systems which functional obsoletes devices like perfectly working iPhones and Macs. Of course the app developers are a huge part of the problem. In many cases they could choose to support older devices, but more and more only want the bleeding edge.

  9. The real problem with tyrants is they keep coming up with new and novel ways to trample rights and suppress liberty.
Oh, and the firearm cartridge trend over the past century has been to smaller and less powerful rounds.

  10. The bolt-action hunting rifle that Kirk’s assassin used has essentially the same mechanism, function, and capacity as its predecessor that was invented in the 1870’s. It is legal to own in every American state, every country in Europe, and even in places like Mexico and Japan, with the proper paperwork. Its cartridge is more powerful than any pistol or any assault rifle you can buy in your local gun store.

There is no gun control law that has even a slight chance of passage in any state, let alone at the national level, that could have prevented this assassination.

  11. Probably everyone here knows how WRONG the comparison to Hinkley is. President Reagan was shot with a .22 six shooter because Hinkley TRIED to buy something more lethal but a gun store owner refused to sell this deranged person anything else. Hinkley was forced to use the plinker that he had. Double stack .380 were available in 1981, for example the Browning BDA 380. 1911 style .45 autos have been available for over 100 years. Charlie Kirk was killed with a Mauser 98 as in 1898!

These guys start with the false “fact” of “the increasing lethality of weaponry” then lead people down the path to the conclusion that they want – gun control. The REAL answer is crazy control. It is criminal control.
