
Prism sights are nothing new, but they have certainly taken off over the past decade. When Trijicon introduced the ACOG and it began appearing on military weapons, other manufacturers quickly took notice. Their compact size, etched reticles, clarity, and easy-to-use sight picture have made prism optics increasingly popular.
One of the reasons prism sights are so durable is their simple fixed-magnification design, although that same characteristic can also be considered a limitation. The Apex Optics Vapor takes a different approach by combining the advantages of a prism optic with variable magnification.

The Apex Vapor is a variable-power prism sight designed with CQB shooters in mind, although it could also be a useful option for civilian 3-gun competition. Its 1-4X magnification range provides a versatile sight picture for shooting quickly and on the move. According to Apex, the Vapor is designed to provide clear magnification in a compact, professional-grade optic.

One of the primary advantages of prism optics over traditional LPVOs is the eye box. Prism sights generally provide a much more forgiving eye box and don’t require the same degree of precision in eye positioning as a variable power scope. That’s particularly useful when transitioning between close-range targets and targets hundreds of yards away.
The Vapor incorporates an adjustable diopter for focusing the reticle, along with capped windage and elevation adjustments. The reticle is illuminated red using a variable rheostat on the left side of the optic with 11 brightness settings.
The etched FIRE reticle has a fine central aiming point surrounded by a larger ring that can be used to bracket close-range targets. At greater distances, multiple holdover points provide additional aiming references for elevation correction.
The Vapor has a 1-4X magnification range and uses a 22mm objective lens with a 35mm ocular lens. Eye relief is listed at 3.64 inches while the field of view is 127.53 feet at 100 yards at 1X and 34.94 feet at 4X. Parallax is fixed at 100 yards.
The optic uses a second-focal-plane etched FIRE reticle and features ½-MOA adjustments with a total adjustment range of 80 MOA and 60 clicks per revolution. The Vapor measures 5.5 inches long and weighs 13.9 ounces for the optic alone or 15.8 ounces with its mount.
The body is made from 6061-T6 aluminum and the optic uses a CR2032 battery for illumination. Apex rates the Vapor as IPX7 waterproof and gives it a 1,000-G shock rating. Operating temperature is listed from -4 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
The optical system uses a proprietary seven-layer objective coating and Japanese ED apochromatic glass. Apex lists light transmission at 99.7 percent per lens. The optic also incorporates RMR-pattern red-dot mounting capability.

The built-in piggyback mounting capability is one of the more interesting features of the Vapor. Many short-range combat-oriented weapons use a similar setup to provide an extremely close-range aiming option with essentially no need to account for optical parallax at the distances where the red dot is being used.
Apex also offers a 45-degree mounting plate, allowing a red dot to be positioned on the side of the Vapor rather than above it. I installed an Apex Atom red dot using the RMR footprint and the combination fit together perfectly.
The Vapor can be mounted in several different configurations. One option is a Picatinny clamp that uses multiple screws to secure the mounting foot to the rifle. Apex also offers a QD mounting option that allows the optic to be installed or removed quickly.

Different-height foot spacers are available as well, allowing the Vapor to be positioned higher or lower depending on the shooter’s requirements. After unboxing the optic, I spent some time familiarizing myself with the various mounting options and swapped several components around.
One small detail I appreciated was the inclusion of stub screws in the unused mounting holes. These help protect the threaded bosses from damage and keep dirt out of the holes.

I also installed the 45-degree red-dot mounting plate using the supplied fasteners. Since I already had an Apex Optics Atom available, I installed it using its compatible RMR footprint.
I ended up using the Apex Vapor on several different rifles, all of them semi-automatic carbines, during multiple range trips. Shooting distances ranged from approximately 20 yards out to 400 yards.

From the first time I brought the Vapor to my eye, I was impressed with its optical clarity. Prism optics are generally known for producing a sharp, clear image in a relatively compact package, and the Vapor is no exception. The image remained sharp throughout the magnification range with good detail at both ends of the zoom.
After spending time shooting with the Apex, I also looked at what other users were saying about the optic. I was somewhat surprised by the number of complaints concerning the reticle because I found it quite useful. Reticle design is always going to generate differences of opinion, particularly when it comes to subtensions and holdover points.

I found the FIRE reticle to be very practical. The large outer ring surrounding the central aiming point works particularly well at close range. When the Vapor is set to 1X, the design creates a smaller central aiming reference that makes it easy to place on a target while shooting quickly.
At higher magnification, the larger circle becomes useful for bracketing targets, while the additional holdover points provide repeatable aiming references for targets at greater distances.
The holdover values listed in the manual are useful starting points, but I generally prefer to determine exactly where each holdover point corresponds at the distances and ammunition I’m using. Once those values are established, they can be recorded and used as a reference.
The Vapor only has a few controls, with the primary adjustments being magnification and reticle illumination. The illumination system is straightforward, with 11 brightness settings and an off position between each setting.

The magnification control is somewhat unconventional. Instead of a ring around the ocular housing, the Vapor’s magnification ring is in the front of the scope. Reaching forward to adjust magnification feels strange at first, but the optic is compact enough that the lever is still easy to reach.
The throw itself is relatively short, and there’s a solid stop at each end of the magnification range. I wouldn’t consider that a problem, but it means that you don’t want to apply excessive force to the lever once it reaches the end of its travel.

Durability is obviously something that requires time and use to evaluate properly. I plan to continue putting the Vapor through its paces over the coming year, but that kind of testing takes time.
Fixed-power prism sights are generally regarded as being more durable than variable-magnification optics because of their simpler construction. The Vapor, however, incorporates variable magnification, so it is reasonable to expect that it may not be quite as rugged as a traditional fixed-power prism sight. Continued use will ultimately provide a better indication of how well it holds up.

The Apex Vapor is not an inexpensive optic. With an MSRP of $950, it’s certainly not an entry-level sight. It also has a relatively specific purpose, making the decision to purchase one more deliberate than simply choosing an inexpensive general-purpose optic. If you’re specifically looking for a variable-power prism sight, however, there aren’t nearly as many choices available.
One logical comparison would be a 1-4X LPVO. There are a number of 1-4X LPVOs available, and many can be purchased for considerably less than the Vapor. However, just comparing the Vapor with inexpensive 1-4X LPVOs doesn’t tell the whole story.
A better comparison would be against higher-quality 1-4X LPVOs from manufacturers such as Steiner, Trijicon, and Leupold. The Vapor costs less than many of those options while offering many of the same advantages in a considerably more compact package. Other than the tactical-style turrets found on some LPVOs, the Vapor provides much of the functionality while taking up less space on the rifle.

There are also several larger 4X and 5X prism sights available from companies like Steiner and Burris, but those optics are fixed power sights. Depending on the specific model, they may also be only slightly less expensive than the Vapor.
The Vapor’s mounting system adds another level of flexibility. The optic can be configured with different spacers to adjust its mounting height and is available with either a screw-clamp foot or a QD foot.

The QD option provides a fast way to install or remove the optic, while the screw-clamp design is more compact and less likely to snag on equipment. Both provide a solid interface between the optic and the rifle.
Overall, the Apex Optics Vapor is an optic I have come to like very much. I’ve spent the past few years using LPVOs extensively, so the Vapor’s compact size is refreshing while still providing a useful range of sighting options.

The image through the optic is sharp and clean, and the ability to add a piggyback red dot makes the system particularly versatile. Apex also put considerable thought into the mounting system, providing multiple mounting heights as well as both QD and screw-clamp options.
For someone looking for a high-quality 1-4X optic for a carbine, the Vapor is certainly worth considering. Variable-power prism sights remain a relatively small segment of the optics market, but the Apex Vapor offers an interesting combination of compact size, magnification, optical clarity, an etched reticle, and multiple mounting options that make it stand out from both traditional fixed-power prisms and conventional LPVOs.

For the price, the QD mount should be provided as standard in the box at no extra cost. The provided factory pic mount is sort of kinda, reminds me of, ‘China budget-class’ stuff on Amazon. Its not mini ACOG pattern mount compatible like they promised it would be at show. The glass is good though, but its nothing different than what you can already find on decent LPVO’s. It doesn’t have shake-awake or auto off, ya would think this being pretty standard in 2026 would be a hint for $900.00’ish. Although being a prism variable is somewhat unique, its about on par with lower cost LPVO’s.
It is decent for a first gen direct from prototype to manufacturing, but I think its over priced by about $300.00 – $400.00

For the BDC and subtends to be accurate you need to be zero’d at 100 yards and zoomed to 4x. I wonder if this is why they ‘Parallax Fixed at 100 yd’.
