The Argentina government issued a decree authorizing semiautomatic firearms for civilian use, a new step in President Javier Milei’s campaign promise of loosening gun-ownership laws.
The new law will allow civilians with a legal permit to purchase and own semiautomatic assault rifles, carbines, or machine guns with a detachable magazine of .22 LR caliber or above. …
Milei has been vocal about his desire to reduce gun-ownership requirements ever since the campaign trail. In December 2024, his administration had already lowered the age for ownership from 21 to 18. Later moves included loosening requirements for firearms businesses and manufacturers, as well as exempting companies involved in these operations from the need of obtaining municipal permits.
The most recent deregulation effort was a decree in May simplifying steps for firearms permits by allowing potential users — either civilians or members of the security forces — to apply for them online.

The sad part is that a simple executive decree has so much authority. This won’t last past the next left-wing administration, and then everyone who bought a semi-auto gun will become instant felons.
There are some puzzles, though. Wish they had been addressed. “…semiautomatic assault rifles, carbines, or machine guns…”
Not pistols?
What is the Argentine legal definition of “assault rifles” and “carbines”, and what about regular rifles or assault carbines?
And does it really include machine guns?
Argentina is like CA. A corrupt, failed state. My daughters company sent her to Argentina for 2 years. Bribes are the norm there. Mail, customs, police, they all get a little bribe before they function.
As a non citizen she had no gun rights. But with just a fairly small amount of money she ‘rented’ a .380 and the local cops looked the other way. Just like in CA you can get what you want if you’re willing to play the game.
JWM, there’s a very interesting situation brewing in the ‘Great White North’ of ‘Oh, Canada!’ of interest to freedom loving folks.
It seems they have a Leftist Fascist Scum ™ problem of their own, and they are so fed up up with their federal government, there is serious chatter about exiting Canada and starting their own system of government.
Seriously! The Providences are in the central and western regions. Ottawa has so pissed them off by not letting them develop their natural resources like oil and mining, it’s a very real possibility, as Canada’s constitution has a mechanism built-in to allow them to split.
They have no interest in being America’s 51st state, but they are *very* interested in doing business with us.
They so despise their federal government, there’s a solid shot the new country could have vastly expanded gun rights.
Hang tight, Canadian brothers and sisters, freedom may be coming your way :

Yes. It is exceedingly stupid to try and ‘protect the environment’ when china, most of Asia, all of Africa all of central and south America and Mexico are going balls to the walls at destroying the same environment. Develop your resources. Let your people prosper. Any thing less is cause for tar and feathers.
Yeah, what the heck is a “semiautomatic machine gun”?
“…what the heck is a “semiautomatic machine gun”?”
Why, it’s obviously fully semi-automatic…
Argentina is a third world hellhole, pretentious, yes, but putrid to the core.
Like an idi amin dada or any north korean, Latin-America version, covering itself with tin foil medals and looking ridiculous.
The Argentinean national anthem has a verse that goes “Liberty!!, Liberty!!, Liberty!!” What Argentinians have had for the last hundred years is “Slavery!!, Slavery!!, Slavery!!”
The Argentinian government is a feudal fascist cannibal that eats Argentinian lives, day in and day out.
Milei is an amateur, pretend classical liberal, that got elected wielding a chainsaw and on day one he shoved the chainsaw where the Sun don’t shine and that was that.
Monthly (!!) inflation is around 2% according to the government and 15% according to the arggie hoi polloi that have to buy the groceries.
Argentina produces almost nothing because there’s no point in trying to build anything because of the “maquina de impedir”, the “obstructing machine”
What is the “obstructing machine”? The Argentinian government.
Try to start any industry in Argentina and you will waste months on bureaucracy and huge amounts on bribes and in the end you will fail.
Anything you may want in Argentina has to be imported and the government makes sure it is almost impossible to import so you can do without, thank you, very much. Now, pay your taxes.
Try to make any plan in Argentina and the arggie reality will laugh in your face. You can’t even know what will happen ten months from now.
Like a cement death shroud the “obstructing machine” makes everything impossible.
The few feudal cannibals that govern Argentina want the people ignorant, stupid and resigned. And they get what they want.
If you lord over forty million ignorant, stupid and resigned Latin-American peasants, you can get rich by stealing a little from each one, every day, and that’s all there is to it.
They only way out for Argentinians is Ezeiza International Airport. Get out and never come back.
Most of Argentina’s real talent is abroad having a good life outside the pigsty. Those that stay put, except the few potentates at the top, make do with lives of squalor.
It’s all bullshit. Argentinians will never be allowed to be armed. The few potentates at the top are not stupid. It’s all lies. Try to make it work and the bureaucrat will explain to you why you don’t qualify. “Sorry! … Next!!! …”
Sure_Enogh,
Ah, now I know why Argentina relaxed requirements to obtain a firearm purchase permit: so the local officials can collect more bribes to grease the skids on the permit.
