Desert Tech’s known for the cool things they’ve done with bullpups over the years. Guns like their SRS bolt gun and MDRS semi-auto are compact, well-built and wonderfully accurate. A few years ago, they introduced their TREK-22 that lets you install your Ruger 10/22 barreled action in a compact bullpup chassis. JWT reviewed it for us a year ago back at that other site.
The next logical evolution for Desert Tech was to build out a complete rifle using the TREK-22 chassis. That’s been completed and Desert Tech started offering them back in the summer. We got our hands on one and, well, this thing is almost too much fun to shoot.
The great thing about bullpups is their compact size. Some people don’t like the ergonomics of the magazine being located behind the trigger, but that’s never been a problem for us. You get used to it pretty quickly. What’s been a drawback in damn near all bullpups are the triggers. They’re mostly awful due to all the distance and linkage that has to happen between the trigger itself and the action that’s placed farther to the rear.
After shooting a number of their guns it’s clear that Desert Tech has cracked the code in how to build very good triggers into bullpup rifle designs. And the TREK-22 is no exception. It may cost far less than Desert Tech’s SRS and MDRS rifles, but the TREK-22’s trigger is really good, far better than what you’ll get on a stock 10/22 out of the box.
And the TREK-22’s 18-inch barrel just begs to be suppressed. In fact, it should almost be illegal to shoot one without a can. It’s just so darned quiet, you’ll want to shoot it all day, and you can do it without any concern for ear plugs or muffs. This might be the most entertaining rimfire rifle we’ve ever shot.
Yes, it will cost you more than a standard 10/22, but in our humble opinion, you’re getting every bit of value for your dollar. With the ultra-compact, light weight design, last round hold open, the amazing trigger, last round hold open, an ideal platform for optics, M-LOK attachments, and plenty of onboard space for spare mags, the TREK-22 is almost too much fun.
