The SIG SAUER MCX-SPEAR platform — the winner of the Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapon competition and the rifle more members of the military are now carrying — is impressive. After rolling out a .308 version of the SPEAR for commercial sales, SIG announced that versions chambered in 6.8×51 (AKA SIG Fury) are now available also.
But while these are great rifles and they’ve been in high demand, they’re not exactly inexpensive. The 5.56 MCX-SPEAR LT in 5.56 or 300 BLK sells for around $2,500. But the latest news from SIG should make SPEARophiles pretty happy.
They’re now offering MCX-SPEAR LT uppers that you can mount on your own complete AR-15 lower.
The MCX-SPEAR LT AR Conversion Kit turns your standard AR-15 lower into a 16-inch MCX-SPEAR with a telescoping/folding stock, a QD flash hider, a vertical grip, and a SIG SAUER ROMEO4XT-PRO red dot sight.
Here’s SIG’s announcement . . .
“The 5.56 MCX-SPEAR LT in 5.56 or 300 BLK sells for around $2,500. ”
But….the upgrade is ($2,199.99) $2,200.00 ?
That’s not a ‘makes sense’ “upgrade” at all, especially for what amounts to ‘looks’ when one can build or buy a complete rifle that does or has the same ‘functionality’ for half (or less) of what the Sig “upgrade” costs. This “upgrade” is essentially something for people with more money than common sense, and heck if you really wanted an MCX-SPEAR LT and had that much to spend on an upgrade then why not just throw in a couple hundred more and get an actual MCX-SPEAR LT?
Might make sense of you squint at the idea sideways in the new overpressure 6.8 loading but for the more common calibers yeah don’t really get it.
