Signal Breaking Through: Australia ‘Losing Control’ as the Populace Slowly Re-Arms Itself

gun confiscation

[W]hile Australia has long been heralded as the gold standard for gun control, almost 30 years later, the landscape is shifting.

Gun numbers are on the rise – there are now more than 4m firearms in the Australian community, almost double the 2.2m weapons recorded in 2001, after the national firearms agreement, according to a report commissioned by gun safety groups.

At least 2,000 new guns are lawfully entering the community every week.

And while the number of gun licence holders per capita has gone down as Australia’s population has soared, there is now a larger number of guns in the community per capita than there was in the immediate aftermath of the crackdown.

That’s because the number of guns each licence holder has is going up – gun owners now average more than four firearms for each licence. In Sydney New South Wales firearm register data shows that there are more than 70 individuals who own more than 100 firearms. (Crucially, these are not deemed to be collectors, whose weapons are not functional.)

And, despite the Howard reforms promising uniform gun laws throughout Australia and the establishment of a national firearm register, 30 years later this is not a reality.

The states and territories are creeping towards the establishment of a new national firearms registry but the gun lobby is pushing back as the details of how it will operate are still being negotiated.

Other provisions of the national firearms agreement remain unimplemented, the country still has a hodgepodge of state-based laws and a lack of data transparency makes understanding Australia’s gun landscape difficult. In NSW the government is considering enshrining a new “right to hunt” in law, while in WA shooting groups are mobilising against tough new licensing requirements.

There are also growing concerns about weapons that circumvent the gun licensing system entirely. 3D-printed firearms of increasing sophistication are now routinely seized by police as Australians tap into an online ecosystem that glorifies a so-called “unlimited right to keep and bear arms”.

  1. ATF tweeted, anti-gun were probably getting ready to have a ‘joy joy orgasm’ but then were disappointed: ATF says concealed carry ‘puts everyone involved at risk’

The ATF tweeted (‘X’d’ ?) this:

‘Take a look into our world. This is a scenario @ATFWasington frequently faces when combatting violent crime and maintaining public safety. Many people attempt to conceal firearms on their person or belongings which puts everyone involved at risk. #MakeDCSafeAgain #ATF,’ the ATF tweeted on X.

Noted Second Amendment scholar and attorney Mark W. Smith asked a prominent Justice Department civil rights attorney in a tweet to ‘speak with the Washington ATF field office about the Second Amendment and the Bruen decision. I suspect their social media person lacks the relevant knowledge.’

Aiden Johnston, director of federal affairs for Gun Owners of America, tweeted ‘Try reading Heller, McDonald, Bruen, and the Second Amendment again, tyrants.’ In his tweet, he added a picture of the Bruen decision.

The Firearms Policy Coalition tweeted simply: ‘Your existence puts everyone at risk. AMIRITE?’

‘Times have changed. This isn’t 1934,’ firearms trainer and author Ranjit Singh tweeted.

The ATF posted their tweet at 9:05 a.m., Thursday.

Twenty-seven hours and thirty-seven minutes later, the ATF ‘corrected’ their tweet.

‘EDIT-Take a look into our world. This is a scenario @ATF Washington frequently faces when combatting violent crime and maintaining public safety. Many CRIMINALS attempt to conceal firearms on their person or belongings which puts everyone involved at risk. #MakeDCSafeAgain,’ the ATF posted.

  2. Virginia: Spanberger’s Attacks on 2nd Amendment Should Galvanize Gun Owners to Unite Against Her.

‘Abigail Spanberger’s war on guns [is] a clear and present danger to Virginia’s Second Amendment rights,’ AmmoLand Correspondent Tred Law declared. ‘Despite her carefully polished image as a moderate, Spanberger’s actions—and promises—reveal her to be one of the most extreme anti-gun candidates ever to seek Virginia’s highest office.

‘From public rallies with Moms Demand Action to her enthusiastic support of California-style gun bans, Spanberger has made it clear: if elected governor, she will sign into law a sweeping slate of gun control measures that would strip law-abiding Virginians of their constitutional rights’” Law noted.

If elected governor, Spanberger threatens to enact every infringement that comes across her desk, whereas Earle-Sears will serve as a veto bulwark against Democrat excesses. Every Virginia gun owner who cares about the Second Amendment needs to involve themself in this campaign and do more than post occasional internet comments.

  3. Is the Supreme Court Really Going to Take a SBR Case?

“Is the Supreme Court really considering a SBR case? Washington Gun Law President, William Kirk, discusses the matter of Robinson v. United States where SCOTUS has, in fact, asked for the US DOJ to reply on a petition for cert filed last month. While this does not guarantee anything, it certainly is interesting that the Court would want such quick input and even more interesting that they have already scheduled this matter for conference.”

  4. ‘It Will Stun You’: Miller Warns D.C. Crime Manipulation Is Worse Than Previously Known.

“Speaking from the Oval Office Monday morning, Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller gave additional details about how the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department was cooking the books on data in order to make the argument crime was ‘going down.’

‘When we share the results, it will stun you,’ Miller said. “There are even accusations that murders and homicides were reported as accidents not murders. This is how severe the manipulation of the crime data has been in this city. It will all be uncovered and it will all be brought to light.’

‘NO police officer working in the city can remember a time in their lives when there has been NO murders…

President Trump has freed 700,000 people in this city who were living under the rule of criminals & thugs.’

  5. Yeah nah.
We Australian shooters see this stuff… its just lame Australian media panic stories being reinterpreted by American shooting press without any clue what our media’s articles mean.

The National Firearms Database story… every state has its own VERY comprehensive system, and they are badly designed and will be a bitch to harmonise. They have a system called Crimtrac, which extracts from each state to let Feds and interstate police get what the other states have.

The increase in numbers… yes there are new shooters coming into the sport, but its also mostly that us old guys are gradually adding to the battery without bringing in new shooters.

There is no carry, open or concealed.

There is no license issued for self-defence even in the home, even for those at immediate risk from gangsters.

Feral animal problems are increasing as shooters are driven out or blocked by bureaucrats, as the social climate for hunting is very hostile. Major feral problems with rabbits, cats, dogs, pigs, goats, deer and camels. Kangaroos and emus are also a big issue for farmers.

And in Western Australia we are being driven out by a VERY malicious and dishonest new gun control law.

  6. Well, at least the gun groups are admitting it’s all about “control”, which they are losing.

    Sod off, pansies.

  7. We are still restricted in type – semiautomatics are near-impossible to obtain – but the ignorance of the hoplophobes knows no bounds. So lever actions etc, those which can also be rapid-firing, are all fine. Now, I’m a feral vermin hunter (pigs, deer, goats, foxes etc) and don’t need rapid fire rates above that which a bolt action can achieve. Yet I’ve still got a few lever actions including a rather cool lever action magazine-fed 12 gauge Pardus shotgun specifically for rabbits and foxes on the run.
Basically, the hoplophobes have failed spectacularly here.
Ironically and this will surprise nobody, the criminals have easy access to guns, especially 9mm Glocks which are their status symbol.
Because, criminals don’t obey the law… funny that.
The standard hoplophobe response to criminals using illegal smuggled-in guns is to try to punish the law-abiding gun owner. Again, this won’t surprise you.
