I am apt to believe that [Independence Day] will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance; it ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.
It never ceases to amaze how many things the Founders got right. Their genius is the reason that, despite the best efforts of so many for so long, America remains the one indispensable country on the face of Earth. It’s true, we certainly have our problems and things don’t look particularly rosy at the moment. Still and all, here we are, almost two and a half centuries later, better than all the alternatives.
Here’s hoping you and your family enjoy a happy holiday weekend.
