If you’re any kind of gun rights supporter, you’ll remember James Brady. He was the White House press secretary who was shot by John Hinckley, Jr. during the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan. While he survived, he was severely disabled, confined to a wheelchair, and permanently mentally impaired by the bullet that went into his brain.
His wife Sarah then decided that he’d be an ideal prop for selling the cause of gun control. Unable to really speak or advocate much for himself, she wheeled him out onto stages and for TV cameras for years to promote laws that violated the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.
Gun control advocates, including Sarah Brady herself, argued that he was an active participant and was mentally sharp enough to speak for stricter gun control laws, but other sources indicate that he was in bad enough shape mentally that he couldn’t recognize people he once knew. So while I can’t say with 100% certainty that he was being used, I’m not convinced that wasn’t the case.
Those of us who didn’t buy Sarah Brady’s claims thought what she did was pretty low. But we couldn’t begin to imagine what anti-gun people would be doing 30 years later.

Joaquin’s parents Manuel and Patricia Oliver, have become avid gun control advocates since their son’s death, starting the ill-fated, confusingly named Change the Ref gun control advocacy operation to further the cause of civilian disarmament.

This latest exploitation of his dead son’s image wasn’t even anything new for Oliver. Back in 2020 — before AI was a thing — Oliver created this animated video of his dead son in order to campaign for anti-gun votes in the 2020 elections.
Now that technology has advanced and presents new possibilities for more novel and innovative ways to exploit his son’s image, Oliver has apparently decided to turn the ghoulishness up to 11.
What many people who watch Acosta’s “interview” won’t realize, however, is that AI programs are not alive. While we can argue all day long about whether a machine can ever possess a soul, we’re nowhere near worrying about that yet. These models don’t have anything close to human capabilities yet for most tasks.
The programming isn’t deterministic (if-then-else), but they still can only take their trained data and guess at the most probable next word or pixel in a given scenario, based on training data and instructions given by a human.
Acosta’s “interview” wasn’t a conversation at all. It was just a machine trying to impersonate a (dead) person. All the machine can do is what the parents, the programmers, and others involved told it to do. It’s a reflection of the will of the people who made it, not the will of the person it’s designed to look like.
When you consider all that, Acosta’s “interview” could have just as easily been conducted through a ouija board. Sadly, many people think that both AI and ouija boards work, so a few idiots will probably be convinced by it, no matter how grim and gruesome Acosta and the dead kid’s parents’ stunt may be.
