There were nearly three times as many firearm background checks last month in Colorado than in July 2025 amid a steep increase of gun purchases ahead of a new permit-to-purchase law going into effect.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation reported about 59,500 background checks last month, compared to about 20,200 in July 2025. Those background checks are required by law for firearm purchases and transfers. The most background checks occurred on July 25, with 3,710 submitted on that Saturday, according to CBI data. Daily numbers in July 2025 rarely surpassed 1,000.

One of the biggest shifts to gun sale regulations in Colorado history went into effect Saturday, affecting the sale of many semiautomatic firearms that accept detachable magazines. Colorado already has a ban on magazines that accept more than 15 rounds of ammunition. To buy those types of weapons, Coloradans must now obtain an eligibility card from their county sheriff, complete a multi-hour safety course and pass a written test. Colorado Parks and Wildlife lists 376 verified instructors for the course on its website.

That matters.

Because the shooter walked into that parking lot expecting victims, not resistance. He had the rifle. He had the reach. He had the rounds. But the second rounds started coming back at him, everything changed.

His bravado crumbled.

That is the part people need to understand about these cowards. They are not looking for a fight. They are looking for the softest target possible and the longest uninterrupted timeline they can get.

An armed citizen and an off-duty trooper helped break that timeline.

And they deserve credit.

Christopher Claunch and Ashley Garibay are the names that matter most in this story. They were real people with real families, and two of the wounded were still critical.

But we also need to show the people who fight back.

Interview them.

Put them on the morning show.

Run the tape.

Because for decades, people have been told they are helpless until police arrive.

This story shows something different.

A polite society is not polite because everybody has good manners.

It is polite because when someone decides to be violent, there are people around him ready and able to stop him.

I want to live in a country where everybody can defend themselves so nobody has to.
