Illinois Attorney General: Marijuana Users Are Simply Too Dangerous To Own Firearms

Marijuana users must have been ingesting some good stuff if they thought that states like Illinois that have legalized recreational weed usage would support their gun rights, too. After all, those who consume the devil’s lettuce deserve the right of self-defense, just like everyone else…though the federal government disagrees. That’s because a gun in the hand beats a cop halfway across town when the bad guys make an appearance.

While politicians in the Land of Pritzker have paid lip service to racial “equity” and “social justice,” those of us who have abstained from weed knew good and well that everyone from the Governor on down wouldn’t stand up for everyday pot smokers’ gun rights. We knew hoplophobic pols would throw pot-smoking gun owners under the bus at the first opportunity.

Sure enough, the Prairie State’s Attorney General, Kwame Raoul, co-wrote an amicus brief to the US Supreme Court arguing against pot users owning or using firearms. In the brief, Raoul wrote that “habitual” users should be blocked from gun ownership altogether, citing the “dangerous choices that [marijuana] users may make.”

Legal Newsline has the deep dive:

Six years ago, Illinois lawmakers added the state to the ranks of those legalizing the recreational use of marijuana — in part, using concerns related to racial equity and social justice to justify the decriminalization regime.

Nonetheless, Illinois’ attorney general now has told the U.S. Supreme Court that the state should still be allowed to cite “habitual” use of marijuana to justify blocking people from owning guns…

“Indeed, the public can be endangered by habitual drug users who experience ongoing psychological deficits that cause them to make dangerous decisions while handling firearms, commit dangerous actions that put others at risk, and expose themselves to unsafe environments to obtain drugs,” Raoul and his fellow attorneys general wrote in their brief.

They noted studies indicating the use of marijuana and other drugs show “a strong link between drug use and violence,” including a greater likelihood “to engage in robbery and violence.” They noted “almost 50% of all state and federal prisoners who had committed violent felonies were drug abusers or addicts in the year before their arrest, as compared to only 2% of the general population.”

“… Firearm possession by habitual drug users can pose a danger to the public both because of the dangerous choices that users may make, whether or not under the influence at the time, and because obtaining unlawful drugs can expose them to the inherent violence and criminality associated with the drug trade,” Raoul and the other attorneys general wrote.

Raoul summed up his argument by claiming that, “Allowing habitual drug users to carry or use firearms significantly increases danger to our communities.”

Left unstated in Raoul’s belief that no civilian should be allowed to carry or use firearms. He sees the very concept of average citizens packing heat as a “danger to our communities.” If only the “progressive” AG spent half as much energy protecting everyday citizens by jailing criminals as he does working to disarm law-abiding Illinoisans.

    1. Agreed.
And the GIANT hypocrisy (again, still, permanently ) is that gun owner Kim Foxx (frmr State Atty) and other gun owning administrators from The People Republic of Illinoisistan were first in line to get the marijuana RX cards when they came out. These people have no shame, no values, and zero sense of ethics.

  1. In the 21st-century pot is a very dangerous drug. It’s not grandma’s weed. The THC levels are one thousand times higher than in the past. Marijuana addiction is causing a psychotic break in their users. Many are committing suicide.

Weed of the 1960s was not harmless. But it wasn’t dangerous either. It is now. Drivers intoxicated on pot have killed people.

The irony is the libertarians liberals and the Left, will continue to vote for democrats like this. They could never bring themselves to vote for a republican. Who openly supported making it legal. Or at least decriminalizing it.

    1. It is important. As you stated, the weed of today is freaking powerful. It is a different question now than it was previously. When George Carlon was making his jokes (which made me laugh), it was a different question.

  2. Dangerous ya say?
    Maybe it should’ve remained illegal.
At the very least we should have a plan in place when somebody is identified to be a drunk, public stoner or some other gross liability to society.

  3. Fly on the wall

Let’s substitute the word alcohol for marijuana in all of this and see where that goes.
Ya I know one is legal one isn’t but in the founding era
    that wasn’t the case.
    The 2A doesn’t mention either.
Alcohol has been more widely abused for decades but nobody’s screaming to take 2A rights from drinkers.
I’m just playing devils advocate because I’ve known more people who ruined their lives with alcohol then weed.

  4. A Chicago Man Was Brutally Attacked in the Loop. Guess How Many Times the Suspect’s Been Arrested.

He randomly attacked a man with a pipe in the Loop.

The victim suffered facial fractures, lost teeth, and required multiple reconstructive surgeries.

    It was his 57th arrest.

But his plea deal will not require him to spend a single day in prison.

“Investigators compared images of the attacker from CPD surveillance footage with Secretary of State records, according to prosecutors. Those efforts yielded Thorne as a possible match, so detectives placed Thorne’s picture in a photo line-up, and a witness identified him as the assailant.

Prosecutors said Thorne had been arrested 57 times by his 30th birthday and had several misdemeanor convictions, many of which involved random attacks downtown.

Now, Thorne has resolved the case by pleading guilty to a single count of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. Judge Joanne Rosado sentenced him to four years in prison. However, after receiving credit for 752 days he spent in jail and the standard 50% sentence reduction, Thorne will not spend any time in prison.

  5. ‘Temporary Means TEMPORARY’: Trump Admin Done PLAYING With Fraud-Happy Somalis (Yeah, It JUST Got Real).

The Trump administration is ending temporary protection status (TPS) for Somalia, affecting several thousand Somalis currently living in the U.S. and several hundred currently living in Minnesota under the protection.

Somali migrants with TPS will be required to leave the country by March 17.

‘Temporary means temporary,’ DHS Secretary Kristi Noem told Fox News Digital in a statement. ‘Country conditions in Somalia have improved to the point that it no longer meets the law’s requirement for Temporary Protected Status.’

‘Further, allowing Somali nationals to remain temporarily in the United States is contrary to our national interests,’ Noem added. ‘We are putting Americans first.’

  7. A happy moment: Lefty DOJ Lawyers Rage-Quit After Harmeet Dhillon Blocks ICE Witch Hunt. [Note: The FBI is already conducting an investigation, has been. The left wing DOJ lawyers wanted to have their own left wing DOJ lawyer investigation amounting to a ‘witch hunt’. It turns out that doing actual law is different from doing left-wing ’cause we say so’.]

  8. Left wing violence and horrors – again – The left wing has this habit of outing their selves to actually be the ‘something’ they claim others are: [left wing] Activist teacher who claimed Republicans are pedophiles charged with child molestation in WA.

“A leftist activist who regularly refers to Republicans and supporters of President Donald Trump as pedophiles is facing felony and misdemeanor charges after authorities say he spent months communicating with someone he believed was an 11-year-old girl and then traveled to Bremerton, Washington, to meet her for sex.

    IT GETS WORSE

According to the Police Report, leftist activist Houston Wade, who called Republicans p*dos, had a hotel room prepared for his s*xual meetup with an 11-year-old CHILD, which contained condoms, bondage supplies, and adult toys.

    It’s always projection with them

  9. Illinois legalized pot for both medical and recreational use in Illinois for adults aged 21 and older. So the state thought it was a good idea to in effect legalize habitual users and: Issues habitual users driver licenses and lets them drive multi-ton vehicles on the roads/streets, lets habitual users be employees of the state and cities and counties, lets habitual users medical people perform medical and surgical procedures, let habitual users run child care centers – but now when it comes to a constitutional right the state hates habitual users suddenly make ‘dangerous choices’ and by those ‘dangerous choices’ some way ‘significantly increases danger to our communities’?

The hypocrisy is strong here. But it sure does explain a lot, a lot of habitual users made the dangerous choice of electing these left wing fools to office.
