A Kentucky man, possibly an expat from Florida who missed his chance at achieving “Florida Man” fame, decided he would break into a home and terrorize a family with his gun last week. Things didn’t go well for George Standifur, because he apparently forgot that homeowners get a vote in the matter, too.
When Standifur tried to shoot the resident of the home he invaded and his gun didn’t go bang, the homeowner produced his own very functional firearm and ventilated the intoxicated intruder. Why the homeowner waited for Stanifur’s FTF to return the courtesy remains a mystery.
Yes, booze likely helped play a role in Standifur’s playing of stupid games and subsequent win of a consolation prize of a gunshot wound to the leg.
But wait! There’s more! Standifur didn’t want to stop playing the stupid game. Now bleeding and limping badly after getting shot, he rested in the alley behind the house where cops found him. Still armed with his malfunctioning handgun, he then resisted.
Yes, George Standifur fought the law, but the law won. Eventually cops hauled him off to for medical treatment. Once he was patched up, he no doubt won a free ride and tour of the county jail where he’ll face a litany of charges.
According to Kentucky State Police, troopers were called to the scene just before midnight after an intruder was shot by a homeowner. KSP says the man had entered a home on West 5th Street in Elkhorn City and started threatening the homeowner and their family.
Troopers say the suspect, later identified as George Standifur, had a firearm and allegedly attempted to discharge it in the home, but it didn’t go off. During that time, the homeowner had grabbed their own firearm and shot Standifur in the leg, according to KSP. The homeowner then forced Standifur out of the home and called 911.
According to KSP, troopers found Standifur in an alleyway near the home and say he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol during the incident. Troopers say he still had the firearm and allegedly made multiple threats to harm law enforcement.
KSP says it took several hours to get Standifur into custody and says he resisted arrest. He was then taken to Pikeville Medical Center to be treated for his injury.
Folks, if you wait until you see the bad guy’s gun pointed at you when they’ve got their finger on the trigger, you’ve waited too long. If you find an intruder in your home, he has a weapon and you see the slightest suggestion of ill intent toward you or another member of your family, don’t wait until they try to kill you to take defensive action.

“If you find an intruder in your home, he has a weapon and you see the slightest suggestion of ill intent toward you or another member of your family, don’t wait until they try to kill you to take defensive action.”
Fortunately, state law and caselaw in my state plainly establishes: it is reasonable for the home occupant to assume that a violent home invader who has a weapon in-hand has ill intent–and the home occupant is therefore legally justified to use any force necessary to protect innocent life.
