Defensive Gun Use Chronicles: An Aggressive Burglar Meets an Armed Good Guy

In the dead of night on Chicago’s south side, a good guy homeowner woke to hear amiss. When he investigated, he saw a burglar “garage-shopping” after prying his way in, probably dreaming of tools, bikes or other merchandise he could sell for some quick cash. What Mr. Burglar didn’t expect to find was an armed homeowner.

Mr. Homeowner just didn’t stand there wearing a red Moms Demand Action t-shirt. Hardly. He had already jumped every hurdle Illinois politicians could dream up to exercise his God-given right to armed self-defense.

He applied to the state for a Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card. Because, you know, if we just have government permission slips FOID cards to own a gun and some ammo, gang violence will never happen again in Murder City USA. Then there are the background checks, fees, waiting periods, and the rest of the nanny-state song and dance.

Because Mr. Homeowner wanted not only to own a gun but to actually carry the thing outside of his property, he ponied up for the concealed carry license, too. That meant 16 hours of mandatory training, optional fingerprints to cut the processing time down to only about three months, more fees, more waiting, and, well, more still more waiting. The homeowner had done it all by the book, just to sleep a little easier at night.

And thank goodness he did.

Because when the 59-year-old garage-hopping perp got aggressive, the homeowner didn’t have to bend over like the guy in Deliverance did. He didn’t hesitate. He shot the intruder, winging (legging?) him. The perp then underwent a sudden attitude adjustment and awaited police and an amberlamps to take his sorry butt to the hospital before going to jail.  Sadly, under the Land of Lincoln’s SAFE-T Act, he might already been let out on bond.

The moral of the story? In the Windy City, where politicians love to disarm the good guys while allowing criminals to run wild, not every homeowner is an unarmed victim-in-waiting. Not any more.

The homeowner, after bending over backward for the state’s obnoxious gun-control circus, had made himself ready when the wolf came a-knocking. As a result, the bad guy got caught and charged. At least for now. Something that’s unusual in Chicago quite frankly. Very unusual.

From ABC7:

A CCL holder shot a man who was breaking into his home on Saturday, Chicago police said.

It happened at about 2:39 a.m. in the 5100-block of S. Loomis Boulevard, police said.

A 59-year-old man was breaking into a garage and was confronted by the homeowner.

CPD said the homeowner, a valid CCL holder, pulled out a gun and shot at the alleged intruder…

Chicago police said charges are pending.

Remember, the only thing that stops a bad person with evil in their hearts is a good guy or gal with a gun. Not a red t-shirt.
