Firearms businesses are pulling down their Flock security cameras because customers fear the cameras have turned into a monitoring network that threatens their gun rights.
Michael Carter, owner of Gun Commanders in Cleveland, Georgia, installed Flock cameras two years ago to combat burglars and help law enforcement nab illegal gun buyers.
He took down the cameras — which record license plate numbers and other data such as make, model and even bumper stickers to track vehicles — after his customers complained and posted criticisms on social media.
Their ire is but the latest manifestation of a nationwide privacy-rights backlash against Flock’s artificial intelligence-powered cameras discreetly installed on street corners, in parks, parking lots, neighborhoods or on drones buzzing overhead.
“I installed the system with the best of intentions — to protect the people who walk through our doors every day,” Mr. Carter told Now Georgia. “After listening to my customers, I realized that maintaining their trust is more important than any piece of technology.”

Besides, what happened to the whole “exercise a right to keep a right” philosophy? Strength in numbers? Let them see tens of millions Americans exercising their rights.

I worked with a Slovack who was doing a Europe trip back home to visit Slovakia around 1998, when he was on the major toll roads, he saw no speed limit signs. So, he did what I would have done, and put the hammer down on the pleasantly powerful rental Mercedes-Benz he was driving, for several hours at a stretch.
When he got back to Florida, he told me he was greeted by a bill from Italy for about 300 USD. It seems over there, they measure the time you take between toll plazas to calculate your speed, and automatically add the speeding fine to your toll, for you, to pay.
Something like that?
The lack of signage and the relatively low amount makes that seems more like a fast cash grab than anything else.
I’d like to see all the Massholes cruising at 90 up and down 93 all summer long get hammered with $1,000 tickets en masse. It’s not enough that one or two poor schmucks get pulled over and cited. The whole lot of them need to be hit over and over and over. Ideally they’d be pulled out the driver’s side window and shot dead in the street but I’ll take what I can get.
Then are you the type to cruise the speed limit and tell others how fast they can drive? Ppl holding up traffic while driving in the fast lane should also be fined thousands and pullef out of their car, hit on the head.
Cameras are already cheap enough to be pretty much everywhere. I assume they’ll all be ai-powered very soon. Flock was just the first big name. I just heard about them a few months ago, and now I see them all over the place along roads.

Plus I have an older vehicle with no Bluetooth, no TPMS, no broadcasts of any kind, and I have my phone in Airplane mode and in a Faraday pouch. Yes, really.

And California is, unsurprisingly, one of the biggest offenders.
See, they don’t just let Flock cameras exist, but they also mandate surveillance at the local gun store. That’s scary, and it’s a system ready for abuse. It seems obvious to anyone who cares to look. Unless, of course, they’re a judge on the Ninth Circus.
