A friend at a TV station in Idaho Falls shared the news with me. A photographer who works with her knows people in Twin Falls who track these things, and he said there was a surge of gun buyers in the city this week. Color me not surprised. She also told me that many sellers don’t want to talk to the news media. A lot of people on the gun culture side don’t trust how the stories are often told, even if newsrooms in Idaho most likely have a few more conservatives than average.
At my last radio station, John Sigler, a past President of the National Rifle Association, was a frequent guest. He told me it was because I was the only person in media he trusted. He knew I wasn’t going to stick a figurative knife in his back.
Two takeaways here. This should be a warning to reporters that they need to do some work to restore an image of fairness. That could take the better part of a decade. All joking aside, the other point is that people understand they’re often the first line of defense for themselves. I’ve heard that stressed by our Sheriff, and by people who offer training. Both Sheriff Jack Jonson and Todd Eccles, our Gun Guy, from Patriot Defense appeared on TV in Boise this week to make that point.

Many observers expected the DOJ to move quickly for an extended stay. It has not. AmmoLand News reached out to sources inside the department to understand the delay and the internal discussions taking place.
According to those sources—individuals with intimate knowledge of the proceedings whose accounts have been independently corroborated by others—two distinct camps have formed within the DOJ.
The first group consists largely of career employees. They maintain that the Department’s institutional duty is to defend federal statutes against legal challenge. In their view, the proper response to an adverse district court ruling is to appeal and to seek a stay so that the law remains in effect while higher courts review the decision. This faction wants the government to fight the case to the end.
The second group takes a different position. These officials argue that the DOJ has no obligation to defend a law once it has been found unconstitutional on solid legal grounds. They contend that continuing to litigate in defense of provisions that no longer generate revenue and that rest on a now-invalid tax theory would be both unnecessary and contrary to the Department’s higher duty to the Constitution. If the decision were theirs alone, they would decline to appeal.

AmmoLand News also contacted sources familiar with White House discussions. Those sources confirmed that the administration is watching the DOJ deliberations carefully. They described intense pressure from gun rights organizations and the broader gun-owning public urging the White House to block any request for an extended stay or an appeal.

Congress 1934: “Hey, its violating the second amendment if we regulate or ban or restrict guns. The federal government does not have a power to regulate or ban or restrict firearms or anything covered by constitutional rights. Its not an enumerated power of government in the constitution.”
Congress 1934: “But hey, we do have a power to tax so lets do that. And as a way to collect the tax lets have people register certain firearms that we will define as requiring such registration so we can justify the collection of the tax. And in exchange for paying this tax and registering the people get a tax stamp. And if they do not pay the tax and register we can prosecute them criminally, not really for having the gun or thing we defined but because they did not pay the tax and register.”
