Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert Introduces a Bill to Abolish the ATF

[Colorado Rep. Lauren] Boebert introduced HR 129 on January 3, when Congress reconvened for its 119th term.

The bill remains in the early stages of the legislative process, and no text is currently available.

Republicans have accused the Joe Biden administration of having “weaponized” the ATF against gun owners in the U.S. The ATF regulates the firearm and explosive industry and also, with local enforcement, traces weapons that have been used in crimes.

Missouri Representative Eric Burlison called for the ATF to be abolished in November 2024 during an appearance on Fox News Digital. Burlison cited numerous “mistakes” attributed to the agency, including Operation Fast and Furious.

The failed sting operation, which ran from 2009 to 2011, was intended to allow firearms to be illegally sold in the U.S. to purchasers believed to be linked to Mexican drug cartels and track them. However, hundreds of the nearly 2,000 firearms involved were lost by the agency, and some were later linked to murders, including the killing of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry in December 2010.

The ATF has also been accused of regulatory overreach by gun rights groups, namely when introducing a rule that classified pistols equipped with stabilizing braces as short-barreled rifles. The National Firearms Act (NFA) imposes stricter requirements on short-barreled rifles because they are more concealable than long-barreled rifles while having greater firepower than handguns.

In August 2024, the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the stabilizing brace rule was likely illegal.

Boebert is one of Congress’ staunchest gun rights advocates. She previously owned Shooters Grill, a restaurant in Colorado where staff can openly carry firearms.

  1. Do it! Kash Patel wants to rid the FBI of their massive headquarters and get them out of from DC, helping to remove them from political influence. Have you noticed how DC votes? People are ready for reform. Modern Democrat and purity test voters are imbeciles.

    1. Kash Patel Has His Work Cut Out for Him Fixing the Disgraced, Incompetent, and Poorly-Dressed FBI.

  2. Ghost of Peegee

This is the second(?) such proposal from a congresscritter is recent weeks, if I recall. Even if the efforts to abolish certain departments and/or agencies don’t fully succeed, I welcome the chance to at least reduce those agencies’ footprints if not outright shutter them.

As for Rep. Boebert, I respected her much more in her earlier D.C. days, when she was a fresh(wo)man in Congress and hadn’t yet drunk the Kool-Aid to act like she did (divorce her husband and party on the town with her boyfriend and her b00bs on display) to sully her name.

    1. Geoff "I like b00bs on display" PR

“…(divorce her husband and party on the town with her boyfriend and her b00bs on display)…”

Well, you have to admit, she’s got the body to flaunt, Haz… 😉

      1. Geoff "I'm getting too old for this shit" PR

EDIT – And wishful thinking on the ATF going bye-bye, some aspects will have to handed over to other agencies, the devil you know vs. the one you don’t, if ya sadly know what I mean… 🙁

        1. No one of Consequence

Well … those aspects are tied to requirements set by law, so if we got rid of the laws that impose those requirements …?

Just a thought experiment. Or perhaps a daydream.

    2. At least she divorced him. I’m sure others in Congress are doing much worse behind closed doors, as they act respectable in public. Remember what Madison Cawthorn said about the DC parties?

        “At least she divorced him.”

Yeah, we don’t know, her ex may have been a real P.O.S….

    3. Maybe the salary allowed her to divorce him and have $$$ to live on – YOU don’t know the full story so don’t pull a Democrat-like move and assume (like “The View”)!

  3. “The failed sting operation, which ran from 2009 to 2011“

Rewriting history to conceal the fact that the Republicans started the programs:

“AP Exclusive: Second Bush-era gun-smuggling probe
    Associated Press
    Published October 14, 2011 2:27pm EDT Updated January 13, 2015 1:45pm EST

WASHINGTON – A second Bush administration gun-trafficking investigation has surfaced using the same controversial tactic for which congressional Republicans have been criticizing the Obama administration.

Emails obtained by The Associated Press show how in a 2007 investigation in Phoenix, agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives — depending on Mexican authorities to follow up — let guns “walk” across the border in an effort to identify higher-ups in gun networks. Justice Department policy has long required that illicit arms shipments be intercepted whenever possible.”

    1. You probably know what was officially called “Project Gunrunner” as “Operation Fast and Furious” but that’s not actually correct as it was actually two separate operations with the separate “Operation Fast and Furious” being implemented under the umbrella of “Project Gunrunner” started under George W. Bush as ‘Project Gunrunner’, this program audaciously grew under President Obama as “Operation Fast and Furious” with Obama implementing and fully blessing it. Obama’s actions by pushing and fully supporting “Operation Fast and Furious” resulted in U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry being killed on December 14, 2010, Mexican criminals getting the guns that were found at over 150 crime scenes where Mexican citizens were either killed or maimed, and the guns being used in the November 2015 terrorist attack in Paris at the Bataclan. Obama, the ‘murderer by proxy’ the left wing media memory holed.

To protect Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder deliberately withheld information and lied to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee during hearings about “Operation Fast and Furious”. On June 20, 2012, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee voted to recommend holding Holder in contempt of Congress. This was related to 1,300 pages of documents that the Department of Justice refused to hand over to Congress. Earlier that day, President Barack Obama invoked executive privilege for the first time during his administration to keep from releasing information. On June 28, 2012, Holder received the dubious distinction of becoming the first sitting member of the Cabinet of the United States to be held in criminal contempt of Congress.

Several of those in charge of the “Operation Fast and Furious” operation were promoted and transferred to Washington – not fired nor even reprimanded. U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona Dennis K. Burke admitted to leaking sensitive documents about Dodson, the chief whistleblower, to the public. Senator Grassley believed that Burke was falling on his sword to protect his superiors in the Justice Department. Democrats on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee laid the blame not on any senior officials within the ATF or the Justice Department or Obama, but squarely within the ATF Phoenix Office – and PooF! like a magic trick the democrats covered up Obama’s role and the left wing media memory holed Obama’s involvement in one of the largest unconstitutional and illegal ‘distribution of arms’ to terrorists and criminals by a U.S. president until Joe Biden came alone and intentionally-by-incompetance-and-stupid armed the Taliban with billions of $$ of U.S. military weapons.

    2. Still making the same mistakes that cost you guys everything, I see. Good on you, miner. Keep running those same failed plays.

    3. I found nothing about his post to be rewriting history. What was controversial about the Holder/Obama investigation was not what they were doing but how poorly it was done and that so many of the guns went into illicit hands, so many were lost track of and how little if any results were obtained. I don’t think anyone feels trying curtail the Mexican Cartels violent ways is an illegitimate use of resources. What they resented was the eventual waste of resources, the bungling of the operation and the loss of life of a good American law enforcement officer in the failed process. I have no love lost for the Bush family but you can bet if that operation had run off the rails as bad as the Obama/Holder operation had it would have been much bigger news than it was.

  4. ‘ATF Should Be A Convenience Store, Not A Government Agency”

There is some truth to that yet a few of their responsibilities are legitimate. An old client of mine was an ATF agent. At our first meeting he asked me straight up if I minded doing business with someone who worked for them. He was basically a good guy but was quite clearly ashamed of many of his coworkers and his employer in general. He was able to transfer to Homeland Security and was very happy when it happened. It is an agency that has been out of control for some time not unlike the old BNDD. Nixon killed the BNDD and created the DEA. They have their own problems and that kind of speaks to any agency not close enough monitored and controlled. Once and if the FBI gets straightened out we should fold the few legitimate duties of ATF into the FBI or a similar agency.

  5. The ATF has become nothing more than a governmental tool for stripping Americans of their constitutional rights and ‘raping’ money for the Democratic party…well , actually, IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN !!!! Starting with prohibition… this disbanding of the ATF is long over due ! And with the NRA ‘numbers’ , sensible congress persons , current state of the House & Senate and the incoming Republican President…it is indeed time to strike ! PAY YOUR DUES AND CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES!!!
    DO IT NOW !!!!
