Armed Citizen Patrols in Hartford Cause ‘Concern’ Among Civilian Disarmament Types

When police can’t or won’t enforce the rule of law, armed Americans will do it for them. It happened in Ferguson, Missouri a decade ago with Oathkeepers standing on rooftops to end the Michael Brown riots. It happened in Kenosha, Wisconsin courtesy of Kyle Rittenhouse.  And today, in Hartford, Connecticut, some civic-minded, mostly black gun owners have stepped up to help keep their community safe and to help clean up the neighborhoods of trash.

You may wonder who could possibly be opposed to picking up trash and helping to make sure criminals steer clear? The answer: anti-gun politicians and local social justice types, of course.

Led by a local minister, the citizens packs heat legally, carrying concealed firearms. In other words, bad guys better beware as the brigade members won’t make good victims from a criminal’s perspective.

The reality of local residents keeping their neighborhoods safe is simply intolerable to those who want to keep the little people disarmed victims instead of empowered citizens.

Here’s the story from NBC Connecticut . . .

A new controversial armed citizen patrol has launched in Hartford.

Organizers say the people will be legally carrying as they walk around parts of the city where violence has taken a toll.

Though some – including the city’s mayor – are raising concerns about the effort.

In Hartford’s North End on Saturday, a group of people looked to patrol and clean up Garden Street.

“It was important to come out here because we believe that we have to keep the community safe, keep the community clean. And we’re doing this by being out here for a few hours, clean up the community, pick up the trash,” said Marcus Long, of Hartford.

Garden Street has seen its share of gun violence including a double homicide in February, which is what prompted the push for civilian armed patrols.

“We are legally armed and we are patrolling,” said Cornell Lewis, the founder of the Self-Defense Brigade. “The people on Garden Street came to us and asked us for help.”

While there did not appear to be open carry – which is banned in Connecticut – organizers previously told us those armed would be licensed and have concealed weapons.

They were part of Minister Cornell Lewis’ Self-Defense Brigade.

“We are not vigilantes. We are a group of people that are disciplined and trained. We go to the shooting range,” said Lewis.

The effort faces opposition including from an anti-violence group and the Hartford mayor.

Mayor Arunan Arulampalam wrote in part:

“Our community has seen so much pain and trauma, and what we need is for those who love this city to do the hard work of healing that pain.”

The mayor added that the city did not need people being trained to walk the streets with guns and trying to take the law into their own hands.

Who said anything about anyone “trying to take the law into their own hands,” Mr. Mayor?

Is that psychological projection? Or is the mayor just afraid of local black men who legally and responsibly own and carry firearms? There are some pretty strong racist roots of gun control, after all.

  1. “The mayor added that the city did not need people being trained to walk the streets with guns and trying to take the law into their own hands.”

Translation: “Our city government does not want to cede even the smallest bit if control to you law-abiding citizens. We are are afraid of you. We would rather have filthy streets and violent crime than have you citizens do the job we refuse to do. Go home! Lock you doors. Pay your taxes.”

    1. Trooper,

One might note that it is also happening organically. Now up to 28 “permitless carry” states (and counting). With the predictable result – no measurable increases in crime. If I were a lowlife street punk in New Orleans, I’d be considering either a change of career, or a change of venue. Sucks for criminals when honest folk are equipped to fight back, dunnit? I wonder how long it will take idiots like Newsom, Pritzker, Hochul, et. al. to start realizing that all they are doing with their arm-waving, pearl-clutching, anti-gun insanity is making their states less welcoming to the law-abiding, and more welcoming to street thugs. Wow, on second thought, that was a stupid question, wasn’t it?? That crew couldn’t buy a clue, and wouldn’t know what to do with it if they had it.

  2. Connecticut has been led by one political party and every year they tell the citizens of Hartford that they are the only ones who care about them. Connecticut has a serious ultra lefty/commi influence and they do not want to cede any of their grip on their power. They have done nothing to make Hartford a better place, yet these people who live in Hartford have to endure the poverty, crime ans shootings. Finally, the say enough is enough; and guess who says we cannot have armed citizens walking the streets. That same political party that is trying to disarm the law abiding citizenry.
