Firearms are going to be part of the civilian defense starter kit for decades to come. But drones are starting to feel like a missing layer of that starter kit. Think of it as having your own personal team of first responders.
Drones are Second Amendment arms. That’s not so your neighbor can fly a shaped charge into your car. Guns being Second Amendment arms doesn’t mean that your neighbor can fire shots down the street, either. Thinking of drones this way just means that they’re becoming what guns or pepper spray or internet access already are — an important tool for you to be your own last line of defense.

Home defense – drone version:
Home occupant 1: “Someone is breaking into the house!”
Home occupant 2: “Quick, launch the drone. That will take care of it!”
News report next day: “Police are investigating the murder of two residents and a drone …”
Home defense – firearm version:
Home occupant 1: “Someone is breaking into the house!”
Home occupant 2: BANG BANG BANG!
News report next day: “Police are investigating a home invasion in which a man breaking into a home was shot by a home occupant …”
Patrolling drones as a part of home security is already a niche thing. Won’t be long before it’s a common thing just like 24/7 cameras with night/thermal vision and proximity sensors.
A half dozen cheap drones can fly your property one or two at a time depending on how big it is and return home to recharge while another fresh pair takes up the shift. A couple hundred bucks to get started.

This is the dumbest thing I’ve heard this morning, but the day is young.
* Little drones, to be cheap and quietish? The little ones that any decent wind would knock into the next county?
* Oh, inside? They’re going to buzz around the house while I try to sleep or cook or watch the tube?
* Or you mean big drones that the wind can’t knock around but make enough noise to keep me and my neighbors awake?
* Or is this to patrol my ten acre estate?
* What can they see that a few fixed security cameras can’t also see?
What next, humanoid robots walking around recording everything and scaring the cats and dogs? Are you saving that for 11 months from now?
