Trump Officials Have Been Working Hard to Alienate a Critical Core Constituency They’ll Need in November – Gun Owners

Jeanine Pirro gun owners gun rights fox news

The Trump administration has moved aggressively to enforce immigration law, crack down on sanctuary policies, and restore order at the border. But as that fight plays out, another issue is emerging that Republicans can’t afford to mishandle: a growing pattern of unforced errors on the Second Amendment from high-profile officials.

The latest example came from Jeanine Pirro.

An Immediate Backlash

Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, ignited controversy after warning that anyone who brings a firearm into Washington, D.C. should expect jail time.

The problem isn’t that violent criminals should be prosecuted. They should. The problem is the way Pirro’s remarks were understood by gun owners across the country: as a threat aimed at lawful Americans who exercise their right to keep and bear arms.

That’s a dangerous message for any federal official to send.

And after the Supreme Court’s ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, it’s also worth stating plainly that D.C.’s restrictive gun framework should be under serious constitutional scrutiny — not reinforced through sweeping threats that treat lawful gun owners like presumptive criminals.

Gun Rights Leaders Respond

The backlash was swift. Rep. Greg Steube, one of Congress’s most vocal defenders of the Second Amendment, rejected the premise that lawful gun owners should be treated as a threat.

Gun rights organizations also pushed back hard. The National Association for Gun Rights condemned Pirro’s remarks and warned that D.C.’s gun laws are structured in a way that can easily criminalize ordinary citizens.

Gun Owners of America likewise emphasized that law-abiding gun owners aren’t the problem — and that Republicans shouldn’t be echoing the gun confiscation lobby’s framing.

Because once “lawful carry” is treated as suspicious behavior, the Second Amendment becomes a privilege granted by government officials, not a right protected by the Constitution.

Not an Isolated Case

Pirro’s remarks didn’t occur in a vacuum. Over the past several weeks, gun owners have watched a troubling pattern develop in which high-profile officials — from Kristi Noem, to Kash Patel, and now Pirro — have flirted with rhetoric that undermines the very principles Republicans claim to defend.

Different offices, different headlines, same underlying danger: government officials deciding when citizens “deserve” to exercise constitutional rights.

Kyle Rittenhouse weighed in bluntly: “Pirro should be fired. There is NO REASON a U.S. Attorney should take such a blatantly unconstitutional stance.” His message resonated because it reflects a growing frustration among gun owners who want Republican leadership to defend the Second Amendment with clarity, not carve-outs and caveats.

The Political Cost Could Be Severe

Republicans can’t treat this as a minor messaging issue. Gun owners decide elections. And when gun owners stay home, gun ban politicians win.

Texas just saw that reality in action when a gun-grabbing Democrat flipped Texas Senate District 9 in a special election runoff — a seat Republicans had held for 45 years. It made national news because it shattered the assumption that “deep red” districts are immune to political shifts.

The lesson is straightforward: complacency loses elections. And when Republican officials make unnecessary anti-gun statements, they risk demoralizing the very voters they need most.

Republicans Won in 2024 Because Gun Owners Turned Out

Republicans didn’t reclaim the White House and Congress in 2024 by watering down gun rights. They won because gun owners turned out, fought back, and voted like their freedoms depended on it — because they did.

Heading into November, forgetting that would be a serious mistake. And we all know what will happen when Democrats regain control of Congressthey will claim a mandate. And their policy goals are no secret.

They will move to eliminate the filibuster.

They will push sweeping federal gun bans.

They will attempt to pack the Supreme Court.

And they will try to erase the constitutional guardrails that have protected gun rights for decades.

That’s not speculation. It is their agenda.

    1. Loosing is not an option.

I think people are getting all butt hurt over this. I can understand why though as there is this sort of mixed messaging thing going on.

For example, Pirro’s comments were in the context of those who commit offenses while armed as were the comments of others in response to Pretti when that happened as he was armed while committing federal law offenses.

Lets look at D.C. – they have ‘home rule’ because congress allowed them to have ‘home rule’, its not a state and is a federal district but their ‘home rule’ status allowed them to create ‘laws’ (ordinances) for certain aspects involving firearms. One of these involves firearm carry without a D.C. permit, so one with legally permitted carry in a state might not be permitted to carry in D.C. . Well, Pirro is bound by law to uphold that D.C. ‘law’ because congress allowed D.C. to create that law by allowing ‘home rule’ and its not been ruled ‘unconstitutional’ yet, so Pirro has no choice but to uphold that law in D.C. – this does not mean the D.C. law is right, its not, but Pirro can’t just ignore it and not enforce it. But notice also that Pirro’s comments were focused on those from outside D.C. coming into D.C. – and this is the way its been for many years, you need a permit from D.C. to carry in D.C., but Pirro makes these comments and suddenly 2A people are all butt hurt over it when in reality its been that way for many years.

I’m not sure why people expected Pirro to suddenly just not enforce D.C. law, or the law when it came to enforcing the law for offenses while armed, when she is clearly bound by law to do so. This is the administration of the constitution and ‘law & order’ too, without changes in the law by congress or constitutionally valid reasons to change things the administration is constitutionally required to ‘faithfully’ enforce the law (“Take Care Clause” in Article II, which requires the President to ensure that laws are faithfully executed). Without that being done, we end up with another Biden administration tyranny with ignoring the constitution completely and not ‘faithfully’ executing the law but rather weaponizing it against the American people.

But yeah, when taken together before and after Pretti it does send a confused sounding message.

  1. Well. Historically the “gun community” has also been against the carrying of guns at protests. Concealed or open carry.

As recently as 2020 the “gun community” was against the law abiding openly carrying guns to “project power.”

    Remember the Mulford Act???

As a way to detour a mob from entering their neighborhood.

In california a gun owning woman and homeowner approached a man. Who was just “hanging around” her home during a forest fire.

The “gun community” said this was just terrible.

How how dare she approach some total stranger. With her gun. Who was hanging around the neighborhood. That was on fire where looters had already been identified in the area.

The Second Amendment has nothing to do with hunting.

The second amendment was written so that the citizens could defend themselves against a tyrannical government.

And in the 21st-century, the tyrannical government in Minnesota, “is using” mobs of criminals to harass the law abiding.

It’s what happened in 2020 when BLM mobs began attacking neighborhoods and business districts.

The proper, safe and, polite way, to open carry is not supported by the “gun community.”

Pretti was a criminal. It’s a huge mistake defend that guy.

  2. She’s just a classic urban, country-club type (R) with a few specks of populist (R).
Thankfully they’re kind is going extinct.
Leave that sort of detached, out-of-touch, elitism to the (D)’s.

  3. The Trump Administration FINALLY Tells Boasberg to Pound Sand.

“For over a year, President Donald Trump’s team has tangled with activist judges who act as if they run the executive branch. These activists in black robes think they can dictate policy on border security, national defense, and pretty much everything the executive branch does. U.S. District Judge James Boasberg has become the poster child for this judicial overreach. Last week, the Trump administration finally decided it had enough of his illegitimate orders, and told him, in so many words, to pound sand.

‘The Trump administration will not comply with a court order requiring due process for hundreds of Venezuelan migrants deported to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador last year, DOJ lawyers said,’ reports Fox News Digital. ‘It sets up a heated clash in court next week in a case that is almost certainly headed back to the Supreme Court.’
