For many, I’m be preaching to the choir here, but if you don’t understand this topic, it’s incredibly important and may mean the difference between a continuing free state and the European dystopia that the left wants to enact here.
Since the election last week, Democrat leaders have announced renewed efforts to enact “common sense” gun laws, including the most dangerous one: universal background checks.
If you don’t know what that is, UBC would require all firearm sales to have a background check attached to them. As it is now, only guns that go through a dealer require them (state laws vary).
Keep in mind, as a dealer, this would be a boon for my business. It would completely change the market on used firearms and would be a major revenue stream for me. But I’m still against it, and vehemently so.
Here’s the problem with UBC (aside from the inherent unconstitutional nature of it): There is no way to implement UBCs without a registry. Without a registry, there’s no real way to ensure people actually comply with the background check mandate. So, the next step would be to create a registry of guns owned by Americans…and history shows exactly what happens the moment the government knows who owns what.
Here’s the dangerous part…and this is a genuine fear of mine: Trump has always viewed gun owners as an unholy ally. I’ve looked at him the same way. When conservatives were in power or he needed us to get him elected, we were important to him. Now that he’s a lame duck dealing with a Democrat-controlled Congress, do you think that’s still the case?
I ask because he has thrown us under the bus once before. Granted, it was with bumpfire stocks and the gun industry collectively feigned outrage while ensuring binary triggers weren’t in the crosshairs, but the fact is, Trump’s history, his ego, and his hunger to strike deals show that we’re sacrificial lambs to him.
When another catastrophe happens (and I hate it, but it likely will) or he wants or needs something he can sign into law, do you trust Trump not to sacrifice our rights to preserve his image and legacy?
I don’t. I hope I’m wrong here, but history tells me otherwise.
