Erika Kirk: The Impulse to Resort to Violence Isn’t a Gun Problem, It’s a Human Problem

Erika Kirk NYT Dealbook Summit

Turning Point USA CEO Erika Kirk insisted that the assassination of her husband, Charlie Kirk, was “not a gun problem” as she reaffirmed her support of the Second Amendment during the New York Times‘ Dealbook Conference on Wednesday (December 3).

The widow, who took over the role previously held by her husband, Turning Point USA’s co-founder, after his death in September, instead shifted blame to mental health and divisive politics.

“What I’ve realized through all of this is that you can have individuals that will always resort to violence. And what I’m afraid of is that we are living in a day and age where they think violence is the solution to them not wanting to hear a different point of view,” she said. “That’s not a gun problem, that’s a human — deeply human — problem. That is a soul problem, that is a mental… that is a very deeper issue.”

Kirk added that she’d continue to support the right to bear arms even after the shooting that killed her husband.

“I wouldn’t wish upon anyone what I have been through, and I support the Second Amendment as well,” she added.

  1. Like so many other things, something that may sound good upon cursory consideration turns out to be a VERY bad idea. Eliminating civilian firearm ownership is one such example.

  2. News Flash: Erika Kirk hits nail on head.

Like all criminally minded and mentally ill killers and violence people – they do it because they want to to do it for some personally-derived motive and not because they can get a gun or some other weapon. In 100% of cases of criminal violence (including by mentally ill people) the ‘motive’ is always some personally-derived reason and its never because they could get a gun or some other reason. For example, Tyler (James) Robinson, the left-wing murderer of Charlie Kirk, did not murder because he could get a gun – access to a gun did not make him do it, he had a personally-derived motive. Another example, every school shooter in did it for personally-derived motive based in mental illness, and of the ones who lived they have all stated that if they could not get a gun they would have used some other weapon to kill with, even the Nashville trans school killer mused in her writings that if she didn’t have a gun she would have used something else. The weapon is not the driver for these people, the weapon is inconsequential to them as what is consequential to them is their personally-derived motives – their own depraved indifference or hatred and/or mental illness driven personally derived motive and if they are motivated enough they do it.

And today we see thousands upon thousands of left wing people celebrating the violence and calling for more of it and even enacting it on various levels. And they all do it for personally-derived motive and the ones that enact it physically use a variety of weapons from knife/machete to hands-feet to blunt objects to ‘molotov cocktail’ to mob-force to sometimes firearms. With over 1,000,000 incidents of (specifically) left wing violence since Jan 30 2025 to date (or this post) (big and small acts, or participatory, including attacks on law enforcement and innocent people and against property – including riot/protest activity violence – with inclusive of common crime activity over 2,000,000, less than 2% with a firearm) – its pretty clear that a ‘firearm’ is not a driver or cause of such violence – 100% of them did it for a personally-derived motive be it criminally minded or hatred or strictly mental illness.

There are multiple millions of ordinary citizen law abiding gun owners, millions of ordinary citizen law abiding people who carry a gun daily. If a gun or gun possession was the driver and reason for why people choose to kill their selves or injure/kill others then there would be thousands (collectively) of violent crimes and murders and suicides by use of a firearm daily from these ordinary citizen law abiding gun owners/carriers but there isn’t. But what we do see from these millions of ordinary citizen law abiding people is primarily using a gun for defense against the left-wing liberal ideology of ‘I can do WTF I want to anyone I want just cause I want to do it’ or lawful purposes such as, for example, practice or hunting. This is not to say that mistakes are not made or there is not an occasional misuse among this cohort, but comparatively to criminally minded or hatred or strictly mental illness its extremely small numbers of less than 0.005%. So the gun is not the cause or driver, its the person doing intentional criminal violence for a personally-derived motive and “that’s a human — deeply human — problem”.
