A suppressed Walther PPK is the stuff that spy movies are made of. But apparently all of those spies must have had their equivalent of Q branch create and install their threaded barrels because Walther didn’t offer them that way. Until now that is.
Walther USA recently announced the launch of the PPK and PPK/S with factory threaded barrels.
The PPK/s
The PPK/s is the Colt Commander model of the PPK platform. It features the longer Walther PP frame mated to the shorter PPK slide. This was done after the passage of the Gun Control Act of 1968 here in the US. That law imposed an clearly unconstitutional “sporting purposes” criteria for importing handguns.
The stock PPK didn’t make the cut. It didn’t meet the minimum weight requirement. To get around that, Walther mated the PPK slide to the longer PP frame which added just enough weight to let it squeak by the regulators. If you wanted a new PPK then the /s model was what you got in the US…until Walther started making the PPK here in 1983.
The PPK/s soldiered on alongside the American-made PPK though. Both models have been made in stainless steel and blued finishes. The PPK/s is chambered in .380 ACP or .32 ACP. Capacity is 7 rounds for the .380 and 8 rounds for the .32.
The PPK and PPK/s SD
Walther has just started releasing info on social media and their website on new factory-threaded versions of the PPK and PPK/s. They’re calling these their SD models. They’re currently only showing a blued and stainless model PPK/s SD in .32 ACP as a threaded option on the website. But Walther social media spots have indicated that the PPK is also going to be available, and they have pics up on Instagram.
MSRP on the threaded barrel PPK/s is $1099. Although I don’t see it mentioned, I’d imagine the .380 ACP versions will be available with threaded barrels as well. Personally, I’m in for a .32 PPK. It will go well with my wartime .32 PPK, and it’s the classic Bond gun.
Keep an eye on Walther’s social media and website for updates and more info on the new threaded barrel PPK models.
