Every time I think the .40 S&W is on its way out, Smith & Wesson drops a new gun to breath new life into the rounds. This time it’s their M&P FPC, folding pistol caliber carbine.
The S&W M&P FPC .40
Like its 9mm predecessor, the .40 S&W FPC is a side folding pistol caliber platform. It has a 16.25 inch threaded barrel and is just over 30 inches open and only around 16 and a half inches when folded. It has a full length Picatinny rail and since it folds to the side, you can leave an optic mounted with no issues. The fore end has M-LOK slots for accessory mounting.
The M&P FPC uses a flat faced trigger and has a reversible magazine catch. It feeds from M&P pistol magazines and capacity on .40 S&W is either 15 or 20 rounds. It ships with one 15-round mag and two 20-round mags, which is a nice touch. Speaking of magazines, the buttstock holds two spares so you can have three magazines ready to go just by grabbing the gun. It also comes with a carry bag that has velcro straps to hold the gun in place and additional storage for spare mags, a cleaning kit, or whatever.
MSRP on the M&P FPC in .40 S&W is $699. If you have a lot of .40 S&W on hand and want another platform to run it through, or snagged a police trade in .40 M&P recently that would like a friend, then it might be worth checking these out.

Depending on weight and other factors this may make a great home defense rifle for those who do not want to worry too much about tinnitus while still having a sufficient firearm with potentially low recoil. Neat and hope to keep seeing pistol rifles (hopefully unrestricted sbr one day) get developed.
It’d be easier to control, and I assume it’d have less noise than a handgun. I’m glad they’re keeping the caliber alive after others abandoned it, but I don’t think this will be a big seller.
“Every time I think the .40 S&W is on its way out…”
Its very far from on its way out.
One cool thing from this is that there are apparently factory 20 round .40 magazines. I didn’t know about that. I’ll be grabbing a couple.
Obviously! .40 cal Booger~!
Maybe they could make one in .45 GAP and bring that cartridge back to like?
I know of 2 shops that carry it both for the same department that refuses to drop it. Neat cartridge and could be interesting in smaller pistols but ultimately deader than 480 Ruger.
The .45 GAP is brutal in small pistols.
Lol like what the G39? I am sure someone somewhere did a custom job of something but the options are either Glock or maybe Springfield XD if you can find either. With that said I have seen G17 and 19 conversions over the years so I would be interested in seeing what could be done in a double stack subcompact.
