SHOT 2026: PSA Unleashes the Sabre Key Under-Barrel Shotgun

Yo dawg, I heard you like guns, so I put a gun on your gun. (Travis Pike for SNW)

I’m a big fan of shotguns. That’s probably evident by my writing and general enthusiasm for the repeating claymore. I’m also a fan of action movies from the 1980s and 1990s. One of my all-time favorites is Predator. As a child, I watched that movie enough to wear out the VHS and my favorite character was and always will be Billy. Billy famously carried an M16 mockup with an undermounted Mossberg 500. I always wanted a similar setup, and now PSA might make it possible with the Sabre Key

The idea of attaching a shotgun to a rifle isn’t new. KAC did it with the Masterkey, C-MORE did it with the M-26 MASS, and many others have come and gone. The idea is providing a man wielding a rifle a way to breach doors without having to carry a separate shotgun.

Is it particularly popular? No, mostly cause of the weight and better breaching options than shotguns, like SMAWs, C-4, and bulldozers.

However, with the price of a tax stamp reducing to $0 (for now), it becomes a bit more palatable to do something just because it’s fun. I have no use for something like this, but dear God, I do want it.

The Sabre Key will be deliverable to your door thanks to PSA’s partnership with Capitol Armory. You still have the paperwork and NFA to contend with, but this makes it a lot easier.

The Sabre Key – Unlocks All Doors

The Sabre Key is based on their still unreleased PSA 570. It requires a different receiver, so you can’t turn a future released 570 into a Sabre Key. It’s a 12-gauge, pump-action, short-barreled shotgun. By itself, it seems like it would be an AOW.

The handguard keeps your hand from catching KSG syndrome. (Travis Pike for SNW)

Since the rifle has a stock, it also seems like it would be an SBS, but previously dual-barreled firearms, like the Savage Model 42, were considered AOWs when the barrels were shortened. I’m not sure whether the mounting setup not being permanent affects this design. Regardless, it’s an NFA firearm.

The Sabre Key is designed to mount an M4A1 barrel profile, similar to an M203. The Key will have a 10-inch barrel and hold three 2.75-inch shells. The pump is shortened for the shorter magazine tube and barrel, and an integrated handguard keeps you from getting a bad case of KSG hand.

This model of the 570 uses the 870 style safety. Other 570s use a tang safety, which would be a real hassle here.

The 570 pump release works well with the Sabre Key. (Travis Pike for SNW)

So when exactly is this thing going to come to market? Great question. PSA has shown the 570 for two years now without release, even adapting the general design to a semi-auto shotgun. According to PSA, development of the Sabre Key won’t start until the 570 and 570 semi-auto are on the market. So…who knows?

Still, I’m excited. I want to cosplay as Billy and satisfy my deep need for a Masterkey setup that won’t cost the same as a used car.
