PSA Releases the 5.7mm Rock Compact

I’ve been intrigued by FN’s 5.7x28mm PDW round since they released the P90 SMG and Five-seveN pistol back in 1990. For the longest time guns chambered in 5.7 were fairly obscure and expensive, and ammo was nearly unobtainable.

That’s all changed, though, and ammo is now readily available from a number of manufactures, and affordable guns are easy to find. The new Rock Compact from Palmetto State Armory is the latest to hit the market.

The Rock Compact is the latest release from PSA and builds on the success of their 5.7x28mm Rock pistol. The Rock is a polymer frame, striker fired pistol that packs a 23-round magazine in the grip. The Rock has an MSRP starting around $499, which is hundreds less than most of its competitors.

I picked one up a couple years back during a sale along with a soft case and 10 magazines. It’s accurate, pleasant to shoot, and I’ve had zero stoppages of any kind with various FN and Federal ammunition. It is a full sized service pistol though, with it’s 4.7 inch barrel and 25 ounce weight.

PSA thought about the folks who may want to carry a 5.7 every day and they’ve come out with the new Rock Compact. The Compact has a shorter 4.3 inch barrel and a chopped grip frame that’s 1/2 inches shorter than the Rock. Trimming off length and height make the whole package easier to carry and conceal. Weight was dropped a bit to 21.9 ounces. Despite the trimmed proportions, the Rock Compact still holds an impressive 21 rounds of 5.7 ammo. That’s more than the full sized FN Five-seveN or Ruger 5.7, and just one round less than the full sized Smith & Wesson 5.7. The Compact ships with two steel magazines. Spare mags are only $19.99 currently.

Like it’s bigger brother, the Rock Compact uses a polymer frame and 416 stainless steel slide with a smooth QPQ finish. So far your only color option is black, but I’d be surprised if they don’t follow with other colors later, like the full sized Rocks. The Rock is a striker fired pistol with a  smooth single-action striker-fired trigger mechanism. The barrel is fluted and made from carbon steel. The slide is optics cut for a Shield footprint sight, and its fitted with steel three dot Glock compatible sights. It comes with two adapter plates, one for RMR optics, and one for Doctor cut optics.

The Rock Compact is currently available on the PSA website and has an MSRP of just $499.99. Still quite competitive in the 5.7 pistol market, and especially for a compact model.

Any reduction in dimensions for a 5.7mm is a good thing. The FN57 is way too big for my liking…it felt odd in my hand at the range when I went with a buddy. Very light, yet very large. This PSA model looks intriguing for at least a review.
