People experience a cognitive dissonance when they see footage like this.
They can’t reconcile the murderous intentions laid out in the subtitles with the American-accented English they’re hearing in a typical American setting with cute kids running in front of pickup trucks, and therefore don’t take it seriously.
Israelis had the same problem even though they fought decades of war with a violent people who lived across the border and shouted their murderous intentions on a regular basis with far more vitriol.
Still, they talked themselves into believing “they don’t really mean it” when those people say they want to tear out your heart because it’s extremely hard to imagine human beings who are not wired the same as you.
October 7 smashed that fatal cognitive dissonance into irrelevance. Israelis still can’t imagine the murderous evil their neighbors imbibed from their mother’s milk, but they’ve learned to ignore their own feelings about it and take them at their word.
