Thanks, Joe: Americans Bought More Than 1.4 Million New Guns in March

As we get closer to the election and the Biden administration continues to make moves designed to limit and eliminate civilian gun ownership, Americans continue to do what they’ve done for years now…they’re buying lots of guns. March certainly continued that trend, as the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s adjusted NICS statistics show.

Here’s the NSSF’s Mark Oliva on the March results . . .

These background checks continue to show that President Joe Biden’s demonization of the firearm industry and law-abiding citizens exercising their Second Amendment rights is out of step with America. Over 1.4 million Americans lawfully purchased a firearm at retail in March, a trend of over 1 million background checks for firearm sales that’s continued for nearly five years.

Recent polls showed President Biden scored low marks for his policies attacking the rights of Americans yet do nothing to hold criminals accountable for their crimes. He’s established an office staffed by gun control lobbyists to steer his gun control agenda and just announced measures to export dubious gun confiscation laws across the country that are void of adequate due process protections. America is choosing a different path.

These figures demonstrate that Americans reject those misguided policies and choose to lawfully and responsibly exercise their rights to keep and bear arms.

Here’s the NSSF’s press release . . .

The March 2024 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 1,442,061 is a decrease of 7.4 percent compared to the March 2023 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1,556,492For comparison, the unadjusted March 2024 FBI NICS figure 2,497,577 reflects a 15.5 percent decrease from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 2,954,230 in March 2023.

March 2024 marks the 56th month in a row that has exceeded 1 million adjusted background checks in a single month.

Please note: Twenty-four states currently have at least one qualified alternative permit, which under the Brady Act allows the permit-holder, who has undergone a background check to obtain the permit, to purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer without a separate additional background check for that transfer. The number of NICS checks in these states does not include these legal transfers based on qualifying permits and NSSF does not adjust for these transfers.

The adjusted NICS data were derived by subtracting out NICS purpose code permit checks and permit rechecks used by states for CCW permit application checks as well as checks on active CCW permit databases. NSSF started subtracting permit rechecks in February 2016.

Though not a direct correlation to firearms sales, the NSSF-adjusted NICS data provide an additional picture of current market conditions. In addition to other purposes, NICS is used to check transactions for sales or transfers of new or used firearms.

It should be noted that these statistics represent the number of firearm background checks initiated through the NICS. They do not represent the number of firearms sold or sales dollars. Based on varying state laws, local market conditions and purchase scenarios, a one-to-one correlation cannot be made between a firearm background check and a firearm sale.
