Magpul always seems to be moving forward, whether it’s totally new products or new versions of existing items. Their new carbine stock is a little bit of both.
The PR is what they call a full-size carbine stock, and mounts to a standard mil-spec carbine receiver extension or buffer tube. If you think it looks a lot like their existing PRS Lite stock, you’re right.
The MOE PR
Think of the MOE PR as a streamlined PRS Lite. It has the same general lines, but is a simpler, lighter version. It maintains the rest at the front edge of the stock that allows shooters to apply rearward pressure on the stock to make sure its snugged into your shoulder pocket. It also has the longer contact surface at the bottom of the stock for resting on a shooting bag.
The MOE PR lacks some of the fine adjustment that the PRS Lite has, but it’s collapsible where the PRS is fixed, with some Length of Pull (LOP) adjustment. It has a non-slip rubber butt plate, and a rear M-LOK slot which can be used for direct sling mounting, or it will accept and MLOK QD swivel socket.
The PR is compatible with Magpul’s optional CTR Cheek Risers and the MOE SL Enhanced Rubber Butt-Pad, which adds an additional 0.70 inches of LOP. The MOE PR is available in black, flat dark earth and olive drab.
Installing the PR stock is just like installing any other AR carbine stock. Pop the old one off, and slide the PR on. It’s a fast upgrade to your existing rifle or carbine.
Adjustment is through an ambidextrous lever mounted inside the stock loop. It’s the same setup as Magpul’s other MOE stocks and adjustment is fast and easy. There can be some play, depending on your buffer tube, but no more than a regular MOE stock, and probably less than a generic M4 stock.
Feel and Function
I picked up a flat dark earth MOE PR from Brownells as soon as they were available. MSRP is $44.95, but Brownells was slightly cheaper at $42.70. When the PR arrived I replaced the M4 stock that I had on my .35o Legend build.
I originally built the .350 as an experiment in a featureless build, but later swapped out to a Magpul MOE grip that I had picked up in a trade, and a FDE M4 stock that was stripped off of another project.
The build already had a Magpul Enhanced Trigger Guard and a Magpul Enhanced Ejection Port Cover that I also had picked up at Brownells. I used the M-LOK slot for direct sling mounting of my Blue Force Gear Vickers sling.
The M4 stock was fine. They work, but the Magpul PR has a cleaner look and is definitely more comfortable to use. The rubber butt plate is more secure on the shoulder and, while the .350 isn’t unpleasant to shoot, probably adds a little bit more recoil resistance than the hard plastic M4 stock.
I like the PRS-style stock profile as it works well from the bench, which is great for sighting in. In the field, though, I appreciate the slightly lighter weight and basic design of the PR, and its simple operation. I could easily accommodate the LOP for the right eye relief on my Primary Arms optic, and can adjust for heavier clothing.
The PRS and PRS Lite are excellent for precision rifles used from the bench or from a bipod, but for folks who don’t need all of those features and want a lighter package that works on the bench, but is still light and handy for the field, the MOE PR is a great choice.
The MOE PR is a good-looking stock and, if we’re being honest, a lot of the mods we do to our guns are to appease our sense of style and aesthetics. I think it goes well with my build. More importantly though, it works.
It’s one thing to have a nice looking build, but if it’s not also functional, it’s useless. Not surprisingly for a Magpul product, the MOE PR is very functional. It’s solid, well thought out, and easy to install and use. What’s even better is that it gives you a lot of the functionality of a PRS Lite stock with the added benefit of a collapsible carbine stock…at less than half the price.
