To the Anti-Gun Left, A ‘Healthier Conversation’ Means Agreeing That Guns are the Problem

I was recently reminded of a story that ran in The Trace whose subtitle caught my attention. In it, Chip Brownlee interviews Dr. Tim Kummer, who was the first doctor to respond to the mass murder at Annunciation Catholic School in August.

“He wants a ban on assault-style weapons — and a way for Americans to have a healthier conversation about the gun issue.”

Now that is an eye-catching passage. I decided to read beyond the headline. Brownlee reiterates the idea in the story:

Kummer, an assistant medical director and an emergency physician at Hennepin Healthcare, has seen the damage assault weapons cause up close — and triaged a high number of victims that an assault weapon paired with powerful ammunition and a high-capacity magazine can produce. But perhaps equally as important, Kummer also wants to be able to talk about guns in a less extreme, more nuanced way.

As The Bob Ross of Guns, I can definitely get behind talking about guns in a less extreme, more nuanced way.

What is the path?

I’d like to see them put a ban on assault weapons — whether we call them assault weapons or assault rifles or weapons designed to do mass amounts of harm. Whatever the term is, legislation would contain a list of actual guns. I would like to see that legislation passed. Of course, I would like to see high-capacity magazine restrictions passed, for sure.

More importantly, I would like to see our country be able to have a healthy conversation about a topic that has become wildly political and puts the pain and suffering solely on the shoulders of children. And so while passing all of this is really, really important, I would love to live in a space where I can have a conversation with someone who has a different belief than me and come to a common understanding. It’s not that I’m questioning their morality as a human; I’m just asking them to look at it from someone else’s shoes.

I wanted to find a roadmap to better dialogue. But reading closely, I was disappointed. Does this qualify as talking about guns in a less extreme, more nuanced way?

To be sure, guns have become “wildly political.” But, as my gun studies colleague Jennifer Carlson has recently reflected, centering the AR-15 contributes to this problem rather than guiding us toward a healthier conversation.

If we don’t agree with Kummer’s proposed AR-15 and high-capacity magazine bans, are we then guilty of “put[ting] the pain and suffering solely on the shoulders of children”? Is this the “less extreme, more nuanced” part of the program?

  1. This is always the case. Just look at their all or nothing behavior with the shutdown.

There is no discussion, no compromise, no dealing. They get everything they want or else you’re a bigot, notzhee or fascist.

They want everyone who disagrees with them dead and gone. Electing that VA AG is enough proof of that let alone the years of rioting and murders.

  2. If we don’t remove known violent criminals from society, if we don’t take the mentally ill (known to be mentally ill) out of society so they can be treated, if we don’t get rid of the trans (the mental illness), if we don’t get rid of the LGBTQ+ embraced ‘minor attracted person’ (AKA pedophiles), if we do not deport/incarcerate violent criminal illegal aliens and get them out of society, if we don’t get rid of the illegal drug dealers/traffickers, does that mean we are putting the suffering on the shoulders of children?

Collectively, as of 2022 … 99.2% of intentional serious injury and harm (including death) to children ages new-born – 17 comes from one (or a combination) of these six sources sources and not a firearm.

How about ya stop embracing this crazy Dr. Kummer and stop worrying about something that didn’t do it. And ya know since you were supposedly “the first doctor to respond to the mass murder at Annunciation Catholic School in August” why don’t you and Chip Brownlee (at the Trace) recognize that the harm to those children was inflicted by a few categories of those six sources I named above namely – known to be mentally ill and trans – AND STOP EMBRACING AND EXCUSING AND FACILITATING AND COVERING FOR THOSE SIX SOURCES LIKE THE REST OF THE LEFT WING DOES SO YOU CAN STOP SERIOUSLY INJURING AND HARMING AND KILLING OUR CHILDREN.

  3. Armed Father With Baby In Car Faces Car Jacker.

(Colion) “A quiet Halloween night turned into every parent’s worst nightmare.
An off-duty Harris County deputy — just a dad buckling his baby into the car seat — suddenly faces a stranger trying to climb into his truck. Seconds later, shots are fired. One man is dead. Another’s life will never be the same.

This story isn’t black and white — it’s human. It’s a father’s instinct colliding with another man’s mental illness. It’s fear, protection, and tragedy… all in the span of seconds.

So ask yourself: What would you have done?”

    1. .40 cal,

“Left winger violent mentally ill trans crazy . . . ”

Ah, but you repeat yourself. A “left winger” is crazy, by definition. A violent person is crazy, by definition. A mentally ill person . . . well, that speaks for itself. A “trans” person, who can’t even cope with scientific fact and what actual, biological sex they are, is crazy, by definition (up until last week, “trans” was a diagnosable mental illness under the DPM, until the “woke” idiots at the APA and AMA got their way).

  4. Florida State University just became the latest flashpoint in the fight over gun rights. A group of armed citizens conducted an ‘open carry audit,’ sparking outrage from students, media, and anti-gun activists. In this episode, Jared from Guns & Gadgets breaks down what really happened, the laws at play, and what it means for the future of open carry in America. 6. SCOTUS Revives Trump’s Transgender Passport Rule.

“The Supreme Court of the United States ruled 6-3 on Thursday that the Trump administration can require transgender people to display their biological birth sex on passports.

The ruling overturns two lower court rulings.

The 13-page ruling said that the government would suffer a form of irreparable injury absent a stay.

  7. To argue with those who are illogical in ANY manner is a fool’s errand. This man is no different, right off the bat he makes a comment about something that was tried already and failed miserably.
This shows he knows ONLY what he wishes to believe, and just as the rest, cannot be trusted to use logic and address this issue on a level playing field.
Then the comment about the Children.
That’s right out of the Left Wing playbook, plain and simple.
He gave himself away right there.
Do not waste your time with this Buffoon, he is NO different than those who came before.

    1. Big Al,

As the philosopher said, “You can’t rationally argue a person out of a position that they didn’t arrive at logically, in the first place”. Truer words were never spoken.
