An Israeli Soldier Shows Why ‘Israeli Carry’ Can Get You Killed

Plenty of people carry a handgun with an empty chamber. Sometimes called “Israeli carry,” it makes them feel better and removes their worry about their gun “going off.” There’s only one problem: carrying with an empty chamber, like other bad habits, can get you killed.

Sure, in a perfect world, depending on the situation, the good guy might have time to draw their gun, rack the slide, and bring their sights to bear on his attacker. The world isn’t perfect, however, and massive adrenaline dumps under pressure will cause fine motor skills to go right out the window. Just as it did in a video that captures an attack on an Israeli soldier last year.

Fortunately the good guy came out on top, but only because he was lucky and had help from a bystander. Watch the video below and note how many attempts and how long it took him to rack his slide . . .

I timed it at eight seconds. And that was after he’d gotten away from the attacker, stood up, and drew his gun. What would have happened if he hadn’t had help and needed to draw while rolling around on the ground with the attacker choking him from behind?

Criminal attacks almost always happen suddenly, without warning and on the attacker’s timeline. Not yours. If you’ve failed to recognize any pre-violence indicators and find yourself under attack, you have to react and respond quickly. Taking up valuable seconds to load a round in your defensive pistol can come at a very high price, up to and including your life.

Not only that, but if you’re trying to fight off an attacker, you very well may not have your off-hand available to rack your slide. And if you access your gun and try to load it, and the bad guy sees what you’re doing, you’ll invariably find yourself defending that pistol in a high-stakes game of tug-of-war.

Most of the time, if you ask people who carry with an empty chamber why they do so, they’ll answer with their feelings about how it’s safer or they’re just more comfortable that way. Running that through the universal translator, what they’re really saying that they aren’t confident in their ability to safely and effectively carry and handle their pistol.

The answer to that is more or better training and practice. However, for a lot of men in particular, a combination of pride and their platinum Man Card doesn’t allow for asking for help in learning how to use a gun.

Just like knowing how to swim or effectively throw a punch, using a gun safely and effectively requires some training. Sure, that training might come from a friend or relative. Better yet, it might involve a formal course taught by one or more competent instructors.  Regardless of where they get it (aside from social media or hip hop videos), good training will serve them well.

One valid use of “Israeli carry” I’ve seen in my time involved a relatively new father. He practiced a version of this when his son was much younger for the spare carry rig he carried in his pickup truck’s console. “Should Junior somehow find that gun, he wouldn’t have the hand strength to rack that slide to load the gun.” Indeed. A three- or four-year-old might find that gun, but racking a slide? That’s probably not going to happen for your average defensive pistol. That example, however, is definitely an exception.

Don’t create obstacles for yourself when carrying your gun. Get training, practice, then rinse, lather, and repeat until safely handling your EDC gun becomes second-nature. Carry your gun loaded and ready to go. Live your life prudently and safely. And always have a plan in case you notice things start to go sideways.

    Kinda the same with safeties.

I saw a guy in a class spend a few minutes complaining he had a defective gun because it would not fire. The instructor asked him if he could take a look at it and did, then fired a whole magazine with it.

Complaining guy was amazed. The instructor hands the gun back and again thd guy could not fire the gun.

“Try taking the safety off.” the instructor told him and then walked off laughing.

What would this guy do under stress of an actual defense incident? I can only guess.

    1. I don’t think that’s a good example. If he didn’t even know to take the safety off, then he obviously had never practiced with that gun before. He came there to learn, not to be mocked. That instructor sounds like an ass.

  2. When issued a 1911A1 while in the Army in Germany, while on duty as a radio-teletype operator, I was required to carry it in the issue flap holster in Condition Three (hammer down on an empty chamber). When alone in the commo hut with the radio equipment and crypto machine, I went to Condition One (cocked and locked) with the flap open.

Fortunately, I got away with it for the duration of that posting. I’ll never go back.

  3. Which brings me to another issue. Went my son to purchase his first concealed carry pistol. The store had a very limited selection of holsters and only one that somewhat fit his handgun (Sig P365 Macro). If you are selling defensive handguns, then you need to support the customer in how it is carried. We ordered an Upper Hand OWB for it.

All of my students have to holster their handguns and fire from the holstered position. In doing so, they learn valuable lessons about their handgun. A few have learned that the little safety is entirely too small. If they have a handgun with a manual safety, they might want to opt for one with a larger or ambi safety that is readily disengaged.

  4. Time index 16-22. Past that is present and fire – it’s racked.

Judging by the massive flinching on the “dry fire” when it wasn’t loaded, you’re picking on someone wholly unfamiliar with their pistol. Which is the real problem here.

If you practice racking the slide on your draw, as you should if you carry this way, it won’t be an issue.

It’s always funny to me how boomers think they’re going to have a Noon Shootout On The Dusty Street In A One Street Western Town. Black Bart will be on the North end, our intrepid hero to the South, draw when the town clock strikes noon.

    A tumbleweed drifts by.

    The clock strikes!

If our noble Boomer has to rack on the draw, ‘ol Black Bart is gonna fill him full of lead…

In truth, if you don’t have time to rack your pistol, you don’t have time to draw. Get off the X first.

It would help if you don’t live so unaware that someone can walk in and take you down like the way this video started.

And if you carry, for the love of civilization, work with your carry piece enough to know how to use it. Whether you carry with an empty chamber, with a safety switch, DA/SA, or ready for GLOCK-leg/Sig-foot.

    1. The Boomer BS being spouted by amateurs is getting beyond irritating and has become obnoxious, leading me on this crappy day to just say GFY.

  5. I just started looking for a compact 9mm da/sa with a decocker. Really limited choices at my local stores or online.

There’s a similar incident, also from Israel, involving a couple of mall guards being attacked by a knife-wielding Pali Arab (that’s what happened in this one — IIRC, the guy he stabbed at the very beginning didn’t make it). It took them forever to get bullets downrange.

a revolver is good, until you need just one ‘right now or ya gonna die’ round more than the cylinder holds.

      😁

  7. Imagine a scenario where the bad guy has a gun drawn on another person. He isn’t looking at or even aware of you. Racking the slide might alert him to your presence. He might be firing on you before you have time to aim.

Obviously getting involved in a third party situation is another conversation, but that isn’t the point.

  8. Don’t carry a super light trigger. Don’t carry a light-compatible holster that would allow something to touch the trigger inside the holster. Remember that kid that reached in the cop’s holster and fired his gun?

  9. The Muslim attacker was not trying to choke him. He was attacking him “at the neck” as Islam instructs the faithful to do. By cutting the juggler with a knife is a sure kill
