In reply to .40 cal Booger. put it in a salt-vinegar bath and let sit for a few-hours-to-sometimes-over-night depending on the metal. I'm not sure what type of 'patina' you are going for, be it just an aged-used look or that sort of greenish ancient look. But the salt-vinegar combo gives an aged look on a lot of types of steel.

“Once the blade was stripped I planned on putting a forced patina on it. I used white vinegar, which is again something I’ve used for years to add patina to knives. Even with the blade finish removed it did nothing.”

Try adding salt to the vinegar.

It would have been extra nice to have a photo with the bayonet actually mounted on the rifle.
