This whole A.I. issue reminds me of the "Forbin Project".
It's one thing to have machines help with building a house or dig holes. Or help in navigation.

But it's dangerous territory when you let a machine decide what actions to take.

We wash our hands of responsibility and accountability, and lit a machine decide for us.

And at the same time the libertarians, the republicans, and the democrats, support flooding the United States. With immigrants and replacing the native born american citizen.

"AI was in use (2004 – 2005 according to this author) and available to the masses over two decades ago, before the first basic smartphones even existed?"

It depends on what is being talked about, origins or present day incarnation.

The first smartphone, known as the IBM Simon Personal Communicator, was invented in 1992 and became available for purchase in 1994. It combined mobile phone capabilities with features like email and a touchscreen interface.

Artificial intelligence (AI) was officially coined and recognized as a field in 1956 during a workshop at Dartmouth College organized by John McCarthy. At the workshop, the first AI program, Logic Theorist, was presented.

Modern day incarnation really started in 1999 - 2000 time frame but it was mostly lab. At around 2003 a more 'mature' version introduced and about 2004 -2005 time frame it started becoming 'main stream'.

Who needs MKULTRA when we've got AI steering your thoughts?
If you thought the cesspool of social media and echo chamber forums was bad just wait.
AI is just warming up and the political class is still just figuring out how to wield it to their benefit.

An operation that once took the CIA or DoW tens of millions of dollars and months of planning to pull off now takes a couple hundred bucks and a few days.
The best part is if it's set off nice and clean the people will finish the job on their own and do it to themselves.

Not so sure about that. One typo is an oopsie. Multiple typos indicates a lack of attention and proofing before publication. When I see this, I typically stop reading due to lack of trust in the remainder of the article's accuracy. In this case, I stopped about two paragraphs in. Nitpicky, perhaps, but accuracy in journalism matters.
