This incident was not a DGU but should have been because going hand-to-hand with an intruder/attacker is very risky. You (probably) do not know what they are armed with (i.e. knife) (unless they display it), you take the chance of not being able to overcome the intruder/attacker, you take the chance of being injured in such a manner as to severely limit your ability for defense or worse being killed thus leaving your family without defense against the intruder/attacker, etc…, lots of pitfalls with choosing hand-to-hand against a committed intruder/attacker (its not successful in over 95% of cases). In this case dad managed to push the intruder down the stairs thus stopping him from getting to the children – but what if Dad would have failed to do that and the intruder managed to push Dad down the stairs severely injuring him, the family would have been left defenseless. This was not a DGU but it should have been and the intruder should have been shot. But, this story also illustrates that a dedicated home-defense plan matters.
